I used to go to Slashdot a ton. My brother still does, but I’ve since started using the RSS feed. I’ve gotten to the point where if I site doesn’t have an RSS feed, I probably won’t be checking it very often. I’ve noticed that now that I am not exposed to the front page I don’t linger around. I see the title in my RSS reader and if it interests me I click and read on. I was never one to comment on the stories, which I believe helped.

My school website has the Slashdot RSS feeds on their site. The school website is the homepage on basically every computer, with the result that basically every time I log in I wind up on /.
The solution to my problem was to stop exposing myself to Slashdot’s front page. I now only skim Slashdot through the use of a live bookmark. I bet any RSS reader/aggregator would do the job, though.
Finding out if there’s anything of my liking now only takes 1 to 5 seconds. Then, if I’ve clicked anything, I won’t usually spend too much time there either. Appearantly, I wasted most of my time idly reloading the main page or something ... Or, maybe I was just too busy being hypnotized by the soothing green light.
