When I was in New Zealand last year, one of the highlights was seeing McNaughton’s Comet. I was on a sailing trip at the time, and luckily that night the visibility was extremely good. It was hovering just above the horizon – a long dusty white streak that was clearly visible to the naked eye. A very special experience!
How to see a comet
How I did it: I wasn't setting out to see one till a friend gave me his binoculars and told me where to look. He wouldn't tell me what it was till I saw it. I can't remember the comet but it was a lovely sight to see.

i went outside every night for weeks looking for it, but it was either too cloudy, or there were to many trees in the way..
i really wanna see a comet in my life time! i guess im gunna be waiting another 50 or so years for halleys comet, oh well it’ll be worth it, im not sure why but i just really wanna see a comet in my lifetime.
I heard on the news that there was a comet visible over NZ, and kept trying to see if for a week, but we had cloudy skies each night. Then a few days ago had one totally clear night, and I saw it! It was pretty amazing, like a huge smudgy star.

I saw Halley’s Comet when I was a kid and then when I was a 16 or 17 I hung out with some friends all night on the end of a pier in Davis, NC (with blankets, it was November as I recall and very cold on said pier) and watched Hale-Bopp all night. It was so beautiful! An experience I will never forget. The whole sky was lit up, we could even see the Milky Way very clearly.
