I made 144 once. A dozen, dozen. I was with a girl for a year and she broke up with me right before Valentine’s Day. It took me about 3 months, multiple paper cuts, and a few sleepless nights to make them all. I wanted her to know and feel like she was worth so much more than just a dozen roses, even though we weren’t together anymore. I ended up mailing them to her address, addressed to her hamster. Inside I wrote a charming letter to the rodent telling him how much I still loved his owner. The letter ended with this:

“Hamster (name kept private to protect hamster’s anonymity), I miss seeing you more than any arrangement of words I could scribble down would ever be able to convey, but I know God has a plan through it all, so I can’t help but be cheerful, even when the plan doesn’t go how I’d hoped it would. ‘Cause whatever He’s got planned always turns out to be way better than anything I could ever plan for myself.”4 years ago
