Displacement and culinary delights 21 months ago

A place of mystery and sensory intoxication. I want to go this place alone, clad myself in linen and walk barefoot amongst the spice markets.

Northern Africa appeals to me as a solo travel spot it is so different from my own everyday experience. I think that in putting myself out there in a unique and foreign environment I will have an opportunity to be at peace with myself. I want to take my backpack: lycra shorts, hiking boots, sun-hat, linen shirts, camera and journal. This place ties in with my yearning for more knowledge on culture and cooking.

I am fortunate enough to have a Moroccan best friend who introduced me to this extraordinary country. The best way to get the real experience of any country is to stay with the locals. The neighbors are very generous, they will cook a grand delicious meal for you. I was approached with curiosity and not fear. They have a european touch to their culture because France left a mark behind. The majority are muslims but they aren’t too many fundamentalists so you’ll feel safe there as an American. The pollution there can be a problem because they use Diesel. How bad? Well, when I blow my nose, the napkin turns black. LOL Oh! I miss Morocco!

Morocco is incredible in so many ways – beautiful people, beautiful light, beautiful faith. You cannot take a bad picture in Morocco. I went there a year after 9/11 and felt so enriched by learning more about this misunderstood culture (I speak for all white northamericans here).
Camel-riding into the Sahara is scary and uncomfortable, but camping in the dunes under the stars is like nothing else. The market in Fez is worth days. Inshallah…
