Have you taken a look at Gregarius http://gregarius.net . It is everything feedonfeeds is only better IMO.

I’d rather find one I like or the pieces of one and put them together with a minimum of coding.

With exact the same starting point: Managing infoglut. We had a feed aggregator that crawled, indexed, crawled some more and stored.
It worked (quite well actually) but there was one problem that didn’t get solved:

Oh – and the fun to handle all the dialects of RSS / Atom and the way feed sources were able to fuck them up…
Now I just use Bloglines for my feeds. It does what I need to do

BlogLines, FeedDemon, NewsGator et. al. are fine and dandy but they aren’t solving the major problem; infoglut.
Feeds are supposed to set us free but frankly they are just taking up more time. Get the info I want when I want and how I want.
