There are still a great many independent booksellers here. Barnes & Noble has its place, but it has nothing on the real bookstores. 6 years ago
Sometimes embracing that “in your face” New Jersey attitude is a really cathartic experience. And since so many people do it, everyone seems to forget your bad behaviour quickly. :) 6 years ago
43. I was waiting for the perfect thing to round out my list, and I think I found it in this quote:
James Lipton – “What is your favorite curse word”
James Gandolfini – “Its a Jersey curse word – You F*ing Douche Bag…” 6 years ago
Our parish priest, The Rev Pamela Bakal, is the coolest priest I have ever met. First time I have had a woman priest. Here she is at the last Blessing of the Motorcyles. There is another Blessing of the Motorcycles in two weeks.
(She doesn’t ride, but her husband does. Well she’s on back so does that count?) 6 years ago
It was first created on the Jersey Shore, of course it has to be Fralinger’s. 6 years ago
Lucy the Elephant is perhaps one of the best pieces of roadside kitsch anywhere! 6 years ago
The availability of Stella Doro in NJ makes up for the pretty awful mozarella cheese here (it’s made from cow’s milk – WTF?)
Annisette Sponge is the current object of my lust, of course Annisette Toast and Almond Toast may be objects of desire soon. There is something very Gilmore about being so obsessed with Italian-American pastries, memo to self : start thinking more like Luke. 6 years ago

42. Cryptic Signs. Not like “read your tea leaves” divining signs (cuz god knows there’s nothing divine about this joint). I mean a printed medium stating an unintelligible fact of uncertain importance. Exhibit A: I pass a small horse farm on the back road to work called Cranbury Creek/Crossing/Crockpot, I dunno it’s some little alliteration with just the right country twang to make it completely forgettable. In fact, I would have forgotten that the farm is even on the way to my job, except for the addendum in the lower right corner. Almost as an after thought, someone added a smaller burgundy sign, lettered in bold golden font, stating the fact that Cranbury Cankersore is also “HOME OF SOME KIND OF TIGER”. I kid you not. No further information is given, and often on my drive home from work I want to pull over and interrupt Ma and Pa Kettle just as they’re sitting down to a steaming plate of vittles and ask them what the hell they mean putting up a sign like that. These people are either advertising geniuses, or pure mental cases. Either way, I have no interest in those type of folks, but I’d still like to talk to this TIGER. Also, today I passed what seemed to be, at first glance, an RV graveyard. By the looks of things, this was hallowed ground where all the Winnebagos and Slipstreams get to spend their eternal vacations, if they are very very good. However, the sign out front stated, in no uncertain terms, that this establishment was actually the PATTY O MATIC. Furthermore, this location was NOW HIRING (sidenote: you’ve usually got a winner on your hands if the sign is not only all in caps, but also hand-painted and older than Jesus). I”m not sure what a PATTY-O-MATIC is, or what the job qualifications for working in said location might be, but if they’re looking for a company mascot I could definitely point them towards SOME KIND OF TIGER. 6 years ago
Goya is a family owned NJ based company serving the Latino market. Their food offerings reflect the diversity of the Latino community and many of their food products are available in the main line supermarkets – so I can get the Caribbean flavors I love easily!

Okay, I hate Mayo – nasty stuff that is no good for you anyway – I mean, eggs and oil whipped up together – GROSS!
Hellman’s Mayo is the brand East of the Rockies, the same company makes “Best Foods” mayo on the West Coast. Not that I would ever buy it, but “best foods” is like buying a car from “Honest Used Cars – O – Rama” Given how cool and hip the West Coast is you would have thought there would be a better brand name for the Mayo there. 6 years ago
It’s 10 degrees (fahrenheit) warmer here in NJ today than it is back home in San Diego, in the middle of March ! 6 years ago
The Sopranos is filmed here. And yes, I have been to many of the locations that are in the show, and yes, I have been to Holstens Ice Cream which has been in the news lately as it will be one of the final scenes shot for the series. 6 years ago
