The sport has a difficult but quick learning curve. Once the basic skills have been acquired the fear erodes and the adrenalin kicks in. Definitely worth doing.
How to white water kayak
How I did it: Discovered the Chicago Whitewater Association, who taught classes in the pool over the winter. Thats where I learned the basics, how to roll in particular. Then I went on CWA sponsored trips on local rivers. And thats about it.
Lessons & tips: Wait until you take the classes to buy gear, and try out a few different types of kayaks before buying one that is right for you. DO NOT buy a used life jacket. Having a fresh, new one, will significantly help you roll as a beginner.
