I’m keeping this goal but changing the destination – from NY to LA!
How I did it: I had a contract job lined up beforehand, ensuring that I had an income source. Staying with a friend (helping out with rent) for several months also gave me time to find a place. Read how I did it…
How I did it: I looked for apartments in the newspaper (no luck) and craigslist (full of scammers! no luck) and finally walked around a neighborhood I heard was reasonably priced in Manhattan. I applied to go to school again, got in (all that before the move) and had a general "plan of action" and about $10,000 saved between me & my partner. You seriously need at least $4,500 to get into an apartment at all here, plus a little bit of extra to help … Read how I did it…
How I did it: Wrote ahead to as many people as I knew who already moved to NY (college friends, colleagues, business connections) to let them know that I needed contact info for apartment searches, jobs, or just the desire to have coffee and reconnect. Took time to analyze my current apartment and sold/donated/dumped as much stuff as necessary to slim down the bulk of packing. Divided stuff into "survival" gear (clothes, business material, … Read how I did it…
How I did it: I saved, saved and saved money for awhile. Flew up to NY, secured an apt(paid for a full year up front). Didn't go with a broker( you don't need to I promise!). Flew up here as soon as I could get my dogs up here! Read how I did it…
How I did it: My family lived in Russia, where I was born. My dad visited New York once and fell in love with one of the colleges. He applied and got in. My family moved to New York. I was amazed by the fast city. I loved it. My familt lived in a tiny apartment. But the city was also stressful, dirty, and lonely. But I loved Broadway and the stores and almost everything. Life in New York is not as perfect as it seems. As much as I loved New York, I wan… Read how I did it…

A recent comment prompted me to look back at this one and I realized that I left this goal a little open-ended and negative. So now a year later, I’m here to write an update about better days.
I’m still figuring out my place among new co-workers, friends, extended family, but I have a home now. I have my little corner or the world, a neighborhood, routines, and they make me feel safe and comfortable. I’ve carved myself out a home base, all by myself, from which to launch into any number of grand adventures that are literally at my doorstep somedays. (Nothing like waking up at 8:00 in the morning with a parade going down your avenue.)
Homesickness still makes some days hard. A phone call can never compare to a hug. My family just left after spending the week with me, so today is one of the rougher days. But the rough days are not as numerous, and the bright days are very good indeed.
I love the city. It is everything I could have ever hopped for and not nearly as cold (usually) as I expected it to be. :) Now I just struggle to live up to it. I tend not to be spontaneous or a risk taker by nature so sometimes it takes doing to push myself outside of my comfort zone.
I am looking to move to New York in July. I am a fashion illustrator/designer and I want to be right in the hub of fashion. So NYC, here I come, a little afraid because I’ve never lived outside of Florida, but confident with the faith that I’ll adjust, overcome hardships, but most importantly grow and become a better person.

im here right now visiting friends. i need to be here on a permanent basis.
This year I will not be able to run the New York marathon due to financial reasons. This would have been my 6 time.I am sad. Its not about the race. Its about being immerse with the people and the atmostphere that is NEW YORK. Each time I go to NEW YORK I refuse to take photo because I know that next I go it will be to stay there. I love my job here in the UK. I hope I can get a similar or even better job when I get there.

2 of my besties moved in september. i moved to denver in october (not enough money to move to ny yet) and am planning to get to nyc in october of this year.
to do it i’m:
- budgeting for the first time ever
- got a 6 month job in the rockies which will help me save money with no rent, cell phone, utilities, groceries or boozing.
- trying to keep posi

It might be unrealistic, financially difficult, over ambitious, but its not impossible, and it will definiately be fun. I fancy my chances, although i really need to find out more about the working visa if i want to work while im there, and plan things a litlle more first.
I have been passionate about this city for as long as I can remember. On several occasions I have attempted to move there, but it just hasn’t happened. At this point, I know it will happen some day. How could it not with this depth of passion and that feeling of being at home when I go? I hope I’m not just scared and putting it off. I think I want to…don’t I?
