How to survive through pharmacy school

So, what was the degree like? Well….

First year—little did I know that the stress of the transition process would come back to haunt me in later years for other reasons…
Second year—it was ok, but the 59 I got for one subject would bode ill for the following year…(it was my lowest mark by far at that point)
Third year sem 1—failed the subject that followed the one I got 59 for in first semester, hated (and was fired from) my community pharmacy job, started doubting if pharmacy was for me.
Third year, sem 2—the stress of trying to pass everything so I could get a prereq waiver and overload first sem, 4th year. Also my first semester where I had 2 exams on the one day, and guess what, it was the first day of exams! (cramming for the 2 heaviest subjects a week before was not fun)
Fourth year, sem 1—relieved to have gotten my prereq waiver and overload, but now the stress of trying to pass so that all the effort I put into last sem and this sem was worth it: couldn’t stand the thought of staying back for a fifth year. Also battling disillusionment and just wanting to be done with this degree.
Fourth year, sem 2—relieved to have passed everything, but then came 2 months of most stressful job hunting, no longer disillusioned (thanks to my hospital placements) but still battling being over it all. And the stress of passing so that everything I’ve done has been worth it (from prereq waiver to getting a grad job) And then came….

1st December, 2009—results: 2 credits, 1 pass. And that’s all I need. Today shall be forever etched in my memory. It was the day I became B.Pharm.(USYD).

Last day of semester has come and gone... 1 month ago

Yesterday was the last day of semester. Everyone actually turned up to the lectures for the first time ever. Everyone was also actually nice to each other for the first time ever. Many great photos. I’m glad to be finishing, but I know I’ll sorely miss my friends. Now heads down for studying!

successfully passed while overloading 4 months ago

received exam results this week. passed all subjects, including the the one I was repeating, while overloading. 3 credits and one completely unexpected distinction. If this isn’t survival, I don’t know what is. Only 1 semester left to go!

Haha, I was googling how hard pharmacy is for everyone else, and stumbled across this :) I’m doing 3rd year undergrad pharmacy at Sydney Uni, it’s a 4 year course, but the difficulty is no difference. Argh pharmacokinetics and pharm prac! Soldier on!

1 year down 2 years ago

My fall semester was horrible, at the University of Findlay pharmacy students must keep a 3.00 (idk about any other schools) average or risk probation and getting kicked out of pharmacy school. So for my fall semester I got a 2.88 and got put on probation. I was ready to drop out of pharmacy school halfway through my spring semester, I didn’t think I was going to make it through, but some how I pulled out a 3.43 on my spring semester and get to stay in school. It was tough, but I can’t wait to go back to school next semester and do it all over again, it is well worth it.

I am in high school right now and am taking Advanced Placement Biology. I find it very interesting and I am the kid who gets the best score on tests in the class. I feel that science is in my interest. I looked into the pharmacy career and found that it interests me. Next year I am going to go to a community college to get my pre-reqs done. Then I am going to transfer to a University. Is this a good or bad idea? Also, is pharmacy school hard? That is a dumb question, but I don’t want to go to pharm school and find out it is way too difficult for me. Could you name some of the courses you had to take, to give me an idea.

Thank you :]

Ding Ding, Round 2 3 years ago

Officially started my second year of pharmacy school today. I still feel weird calling myself a 2nd year student, since I still feel just as dazed as confused as I did last year. I thought today my prof would just give a quick overview of the syllabus and dismiss class, being the first day of school and all….instead the prof proceeded to go straight into a 2-hour lecture about agonists, antagonists, receptors, etc. etc. So much for having that “first day” buffer. Blech.

Oh, and I got to take a big, fat exam today! It was 105 questions…and that’s just for Part 1. I’ll be taking Part 2 tomorrow, which will probably have just as many questions. I’ve already got a feeling that 2nd year is definitely not sissy stuff.

I couldn’t cut it. At least right now.
