Hitch-hike to Riga

Awesome trip! 3 years ago

Man, I’ll need to keep this short otherwise too many stories will spill out…

We got all the way to Riga without spending a penny on transport, and only having to pay for one night in a hostel! Success beyond my imagination :)

After leaving Sheffield, UK on Saturday lunchtime, we arrived in Berlin at 7:30am on the Monday morning (having blagged a night in a hotel in Dover on Saturday night, and sleeping on a train we blagged on Sunday night). As the party was on the Tuesday night in Berlin, we took a couple of days out to have a look around the city, which was veh nice.

On Wednesday morning, we left Berlin on our way to Riga. After several truck journeys (including one night sleeping in the cab and playing poker with the driver) we arrived in Lithuania. We spent the Thursday night sleeping in a nice man’s house in Kaunas before hitching down to Vilnius on the Friday morning. As we didn’t have to be in Riga ‘til the Saturday night, we felt we could afford a little time-off to see a bit of Latvia’s Baltic neighbour.

Vilnius was amazing and we spent the night with a couple of random Lithuanian’s at a Bix gig and then had a midnight tour of the city being told stories of the Soviet era. Amazing.

On the Saturday morning, we left Vilnius and hitched (via a million lifts!) to Riga, arriving in time for the big re-union party.

After Bummit, a few of us went travelling around Latvia for the week, going to Cesis, the Gauja National Park, Sigulda and the Jurmala coast.

A hectic, but awesome, couple of weeks _

Bummit to the Baltics 3 years ago

Again, I’ll be getting my hitch on to hitch-hike across Europe to the capital of Latvia.

Students from Sheffield University, 150 of them, will be leaving on Saturday 1st April to get through the UK, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia in a week, spending less than £15 on transport. We’re all meeting up in Berlin three days in for a wee party.

Despite the Berlin party (and the fact I’d like to visit), I’m really rather tempted to take the Northern Route and attempt to travel via Norway and Sweden! Oh, if only it were viable…
