I have been asked the ‘what do you do’ question several times recently. A spike in frequency that is somewhat alarming, but would be less so if I had a comfortable answer.
“Accountant,” is what I have said, though it makes me laugh because it feels like a lie. If I say, ‘data entry with more stress,’ it’s more accurate, but tends to confuse people. Then I get nauseous, because I think, ‘shit, is that really what I do?’
The other things I do, you know, the Stuff That Matters, is so various and across the board that it’s difficult to sum up. Husband, son, screen printer, photographer, web mess-arounder, hopeful stained glass student, batik’er, writer, one time possible future time sculptor, machine, blogger, idiot, chalk blogger, consumer, seller, acquirer, jester, asshole.
Today, I’m leaning toward ‘artist,’ but that too just doesn’t feel true, but ‘I make stuff,’ will again, just confuse people.
But I guess the goal isn’t accuracy, is it? The goal is to get through situations that you are in where asked, ‘so, what do you do?’
