FigalillyJust a thought.

The other day I was thinking that the way they keep writing Star Wars novels, I will never ever finish reading them all. There will always be more.

This makes me indescribably happy. 19 months ago

FigalillyJust started Heir to the Empire.

Very cool so far. I have to say, the bad guys are not being very smart picking on Leia. Yes, lets make the Force-using woman with morning sickness angry, what could possibly go wrong, lol. 2 years ago

jsherrySacrifice

Good – the rise of Jacen as Sith. 2 years ago

jsherryLuke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor

Okay…so…I love Stover’s work and all, and there is much to like here…and Stover is one of the better Star Wars authors…

But, ya know…my expectations may have been too high.

It could have been better. 3 years ago

jsherryTempest

I don’t expect much out of Troy Denning, so I can’t complain about this. It was fairly good and builds the Jacen = bad well.

Legacy of the Force is shaping up alright. 3 years ago

jsherryWild Space

Very solid entry from Karen Miller. It’s a little slow and dry, but excellent characterization of Obi-Wan and Bail Organa. 3 years ago

jsherryOrder 66 and Bloodlines

Karen Traviss is my Star Wars Goddess. Order 66 is the best of her SW work (with two of her LOTF novels to go) and Bloodlines ain’t too shabby, either.

Basically, Order 66 is everything I want from Karen Traviss. 3 years ago

jsherryBetrayal

This opening to the Legacy of the Force series is a great opening. Aaron Allston was the right man to set the table and he does so with some solid action and humor in just the right places. Star Wars needs more of Aaron Allston. 3 years ago

jsherryThe Force Unleashed

Ahh, Sean Williams, how I expected more from you.

While not bad like the other video game adaption (The Ruins of Dantooine), The Force Unleashed was still an overall disappointment. While this could be said about most books in general and most Star Wars in particular, I don’t think The Force Unleashed really added anything to the canon. Yeah, it tied in to the forming of the Rebel Alliance and we get Vader, Palpatine, and a little Leia, but after reading it I got the feeling of “yeah? So what?”

Disappointing. 3 years ago

jsherryThe Clone Wars

The usually reliable Karen Traviss makes a small misstep here. The Clone Wars is minor Traviss, which is still pretty good but she is so much better than this book.

The only thing I can think of is that she was either given a tiny page / word count, or the script to the animated movie was so bad that it was a minor miracle she did this well to begin with.

Either way…a good and fast read, but Traviss can do far better. 3 years ago

jsherryThe Swarm War

ehhh…it also sucked less than the Joiner King, but I really couldn’t have been happier to be finished with this trilogy. So bad. 3 years ago

jsherryJedi Twilight

Except for his Death Star novel, Michael Reaves is a consistently good SW writer. Jedi Twilight is no different. Set after Revenge of the Sith, the novel (first of a trilogy) features characters introduced in earlier Clone Wars novels. Reaves is good enough of a writer to make these minor characters matter.

Looking forward to Street of Shadows. 3 years ago

jsherryThe Unseen Queen

Less crappy than The Joiner King, but I’ll be happy when I’m done with these Dark Nest books. Normally I’d just stop reading them, but I’m trying to read all of the Star Wars novels and unfortunately, these are just some of the sucky ones. 3 years ago

jsherryThe Joiner King

This infernal book took way too long. Not good, with some moments of sucking less. 3 years ago

jsherryNJO: Done

Finished the New Jedi Order series. 19 books, most were decent to good, some (Traitor) were damn good. But, as a whole, I can’t say I really felt satisfied with the series.

Time to move on to Dark Nest, then Legacy of the Force. 3 years ago

jsherryDarth Bane: Rule of Two

Just…not so good. I enjoyed the first book Path of Destruction, but this one seemed to lack something. Vague, I know, but just know that these early Darth Bane books are just not as strong as the primary chronology. 3 years ago

jsherryForce Heretic: Refugee

It was…okay. I think I’m running out of steam a little bit and had hoped for more from this second Force Heretic novel. This is book 16 of 19 of the New Jedi Order series. 3 years ago

jsherryForce Heretic: Remnant

Gets from point a to point b, but while the book read fast and set up things I’m sure will be revealed in the next two Force Heretic novels, this is just an average book. Neither exceptional nor bad. 4 years ago

jsherryDeath Star and Republic Commando: True Colors

Death Star was horrible, RC:TC was excellent, as is everything by Karen Traviss 4 years ago

jsherryDestiny's Way

Walter Jon Williams brings everything back together and sets up the final push of the novels. Quite good, and all the more impressive for coming on the heels of Stover’s excellent Traitor. 4 years ago

jsherryTraitor

Limited in scope, bleak, nobody does it better than Matthew Stover! 4 years ago

jsherryEnemy Lines II: Rebel Stand

Again, another slower Allston work, but entertaining all the same. Better than the average NJO novel. 4 years ago

jsherryEnemy Lines I: Rebel Dream, by Aaron Allston

Started a bit slow, but I like Allston’s Star Wars work and he even threw in an Ewok pilot reference so all is right with the world. Much better than the awful Dark Journey. 4 years ago

jsherryDark Journey

Did anything happen here? Anybody?

No? Just checking. 4 years ago

jsherryStar by Star

No Star Wars novel needs to be 600 pages, not even one where two major events occured (and they’re big!), not even if Matthew Stover had written it (he didn’t).

There were some solid action sequences and good entertainment (of the brutal kind because some bad stuff happens here) in the second half of the novel, but Star by Star really could have been cut to at most 400 pages and nobody would have noticed. 4 years ago

jsherryEdge of Victory II: Rebirth

Just as good as Edge of Victory I. I wish Keyes wrote more NJO and Star Wars novels (though I know he wrote NJO 18). Fantastic fun! 4 years ago

TheRaeUntitled

Giving up this goal because I can’t even remember why I wanted to do it in the first place. 4 years ago

jsherryEdge of Victory I: Conquest

A huge improvement over Balance Point. Keyes has an easy style which is chock full of action and adventure and Anakin Solo as a hero. A solid entry. 4 years ago

jsherryBalance Point

This sixth entry in the New Jedi Order series is very disappointing. The first hundred pages were very slow. So, overall, it was only worth the effort because it is a middle book in a long series. Otherwise, skippable. 4 years ago

jsherryAgents of Chaos II: Jedi Eclipse

Chock full of more action than I expected from Luceno, some intrigue and an exciting story where most of our primaries get involved in small amounts. Mostly, this is a Leia story with some Han and some other Jedi. Superior to the first Agents of Chaos book. 4 years ago
