How I did it: In mid-2006, I began saving money with the plan to quit my job and move to NYC by the start of 2007. I made phone calls and contacted people in my industry, even did a few phone interviews, but ultimately ended up moving here without full-time work.Within about three weeks of arriving, I landed some freelance work and eventually a full-time job. I've now been living in Manhattan 2.5 years, and I love it more all the time. I'm a copy edit… Read how I did it…
How I did it: i packed up all my stuff in my car one night and left, it was a very quick decision to go. but it was one that i had been working towards for a while. Read how I did it…

My name is Sarah Protzman, and I’m 27. I moved here in early 2007 with no job, no apartment and some savings. When people ask why I moved all the way from small-town Colorado to NYC, I say, “Because I wanted to.”
A lot of fear mongering goes on about moving to New York City. I have yet to get to understand why. Scaring people into thinking they can’t do what we ourselves have done doesn’t make sense.
My blog, NewNewYorkers.info, shares the tips and tricks I still use every day. It’ll teach you what a guidebook never could! I love encouraging others who want to move here. I also wrote a book, “Standing Room Only: Two Years in New York City” about my transition experience.
When I had just moved here and made less than $30K, I had a lot of people in my ear. I’m not now — nor was I then — under any illusions that this city can’t be cold, expensive and frustrating, but please take heart and — like any good New Yorker would — don’t believe everything you hear.
Beware of absolutes — never, no one, always. These are never true, and they are poison to your goals. New York City life really is as great as they say, and I would recommend everyone who wants to be here to follow through on their dream!
I had been to NYC couple of times…just fell in love with the first time i went….love the vibrancy, diversity and the fast life style….i want to settle down in NYC…looking for a suitable job so that i can move and enjoy NYC
I only miss New York when I am breathing. So, I think before my life is over I should return for a while.

I finally live in NYC!!! Its a funny story, I came to New York in the spring to visit some friends, and wound up meeting the perfect guy…..and now we’re married! Six months ago, I never thought I would be married or living out one of my dreams. But Im soooo happy. And the city is soooo excited and the culture is amazing.

I lived in NYC for 2 years. It ended badly because of a job. I moved back home to figure out what I’m going to do with my life. I have a plan to stay at home with parents, get out of debt, go back to school, become a nurse and move back in two years.
nispertun is on spring break!
About two weeks ago I got a nice little 2BR apartment in Washington Heights right along Riverside Park and I’m very happy with it. Well there’s a little problem with german cockroaches but my building manager is fantastically on top of things. I will say, however, that Manhattan is a lot more hectic and stressful than I had initially imagined. Even though I love it, once I’m no longer commuting back to NJ for school, I’m definitely going to move to one of the other boroughs. Queens is surprisingly nice in Astoria and Ridgewood and has a strong Romanian population there and the Bronx has some pretty parts, especially if you’re willing to move all the way out to City Island. I guess I just prefer a more laidback feel to life… although a year of excitement certainly won’t do me any harm.

starletsteph asks,
“Does anyone know the best way to pick up and move to NYC? Should you find a roommate? Or find someone you actually know there? Or just start from scratch by yourself?”
