How to buy a kilt
How I did it: I found a few places that would procure a kilt but I wanted a formal dress one made to order with my family tartan. Tracking down my family lineage to a tartan was difficult, especially since it's a small and rare clan. I eventually settled on The Scottish Lion and went and had measurements taken (it was strange: the tailor hadn't taken these kind of measurements before so I had to bring in the instructions).
There are a lot of accessories if you're going to formally dress including a Prince Charlie Jacket, flashes, sporran, etc which can become a quite expensive investment. It took several weeks for them to make and ship it. It's a rare occasion when I get to wear it but it's a great way to celebrate that aspect (albeit it small) of my family's heritage.

Wow I just realized that this is one of my most heavily cheered goals and the vast majority of the cheers have been from women. So ladies what is it that you like about kilts?
Iron Man is one busy hombre
This is also called the great kilt. It is the earlier form of the “belted plaid.” It is nine ells (about five and a half yards) of pure wool plaid tartan. It is laid out on the ground first, then the belt is placed under it. The wearer then lies down on top of it, and wraps it about himself, belting it in place. The next step is to stand up and decide what to do with all the rest of it that’s dangling down. The ends can be attatched together, and thrown over a shoulder, or just one end can be attatched to the waist coat, with the other end left stylishly dangling. On hot days it can be rolled up into a bustle, and on cold and rainy days it can be placed over the head and sholders like a peasant’s cloak.
At the moment given my other goal of losing weight and the cost of kilts compared to pants it doesn’t make sense to buy it before I’m at the weight that I’m working towards. As an added sense of motivation if I can drop a few more inches in my waist I’ll be in a lower kilt size which translated to a lower price.
I bought a Utilikilt after my son wore a traditional kilt to his prom and decided he’d like an “everyday” one for, well, every day. I was ordering his and just took the plunge myself. I love mine!
From time to time I’ve been toying with the idea of picking up a kilt for the past year or so. Sometime down the road it might have to happen, although its not a high priority.
