Learn to appreciate the city I live in

Today I definitely found something I love about Birmingham: Niki’s West. This little restaurant contains the most amazing Southern food I have ever tasted. Truly, it throws my back to my childhood, the good parts of it.

I didn’t want to move to Birmingham. I fought it kicking and screaming. But all my tantrums and whining couldn’t change the fact that Birmingham was where the job market and the good business school meant I needed to be. And so now I am here. At least until I finish my MBA.

But I am unhappy. And I let that unhappiness permeate almost all aspects of my life. I say that I don’t like the city, but I think the real reason I am unhappy is because I feel trapped here. As a result, I vilify Birmingham. Unnecessarily, I think.

I need to get to know this city. I need to accept that I am here for a few more years and I need to make the most of it.
