How to volunteer at the Humane Society

 "Been doing this six months and I can't even count the numbers of cats I've helped, it feels great."
How I did it: Basically after adopting my 2nd cat I realized that while I was giving them good homes, I had time in my abnormal schedule to volunteer as a kitten feeder at the Humane Society. So I pulled up my socks, signed up, and every Monday evening I work the late shift, 11pm-3am feeding kittens in need. It's really rewarding and even the sickest kittens are the cutest things on the planet. 3-4 hours a week, you can do it too. Lessons & tips: Most humane societies/animal service centres need help. Just call/go in person, tell them you need to help and it'll be easy from there. You will need your tetanus shot in the last 10 years from my experience. |

How I did it: I liked walking dogs and fostering kittens more than all of my various volunteer projects aimed more at helping people! This surprised me. But with people, my attempts were ambiguous as to whether or not they really made any difference, at the Humane Society, I could meet the people adopting the animals I'd worked with and actually feel satisfied that I'd made a difference!!!! How I did it: I called the Humane Society, scheduled and completed a volunteer orientation, and now I get to come and go as I please. I wear a volunteer tag and log my hours as I complete them, and I walk the dogs and help the staff with cleaning tasks while I'm there. The process was much easier than I originally thought it would be, and I get as much out of it as the animals do! Read how I did it…

that I would call on a Thursday to set up a volunteer orientation and they are closed on Thursdays and Sundays! Still, I’m one step closer!

I downloaded the form to sign up the other day and filled a lot of it out. I have been really busy and forgot about it. I just saw an APSCA commercial which reminded me I need to do this. I feel a part of me that is reluctant to do this and trying to put it off. I think I am scared that the animals will make me sad. Also the thought of doing something new scares me a little.
