mruk is close to losing the plot.....
I Swam 3000meters when i was 8years old, i was a superb natural swimmer, with the right training i think this is a possibility.
Obviously i’d need to train like mad, and i do have a mate that would be the perfect training partner… Despite not doing much swimming in the last 12years, i’m still a strong swimmer and have never lost it
Won’t be doing this for a few years, but its been an idea for a while.

i made my first attempt at swimming the english channel a few weeks ago. unfortunately i was unsuccesful, being pulled from the water after almost 15 hours and with france within sight. the tides had turned and were against me, carrying me sideways for the last few hours. after training for over a year, to get so close and fail was devastating, but i will be back in 2011 for another go. next time i will be faster and stronger and i will make it!
playdreamer. not wearing a wetsuit is to keep the swim in line with matthew webbs first ever swim back in 1875, wearing just a costume. it is part of the challenge, you versus the elements. yes its cold, its also dirty and rough and theres ferries and tankers and jellyfish, and strong tides that wash you up and down the channel. thats the challenge. without a support boat and the help of one of the Channel swimming associations, dont even bother

I’m having doubts about this. You need to hire a support boat at a cost of c. £2,000 and if you want your swim to be ‘recognised’ by one of the Channel Swimming associations you can’t wear a wetsuit.
To spend so much in pursuit of this goal seems indulgent and putting recognition before common sense, viz-a-viz the wetsuit, makes me question my motivation: is this challenge for my own satisfaction or for glory?
I wonder what would be a good alternative swimming challenge?

Am I ready to swim the Channel? Of course not. I will be… or I’ll sink.

i was never much of a swimmer. but i want to swim the channel to prove to myself that diabetes and my other mental blocks cant keep me from doing great things.
i know it will take months of preparation and practice.

I am currently training to swim the English Channel in September 2008 for save the Children. You can find out how I get on at my website, www.ultimatetriathlon.co.uk. So far it has been a lot of early mornings, a lot of swimming, and plenty of dips in the sea which at the moment is freezing!!!!!!!!

I would like to train to swim the channel in summer 2009….
It’s a crazy idea but the more I think about it the more I want to do it.
Anyone need a swimming buddy in the Germany/Netherlands area?
:)

I managed this in 1999. And I agree very much that the Manhattan Island Marathon swim is a great appetiser. Good luck to anyone going for it!
