I think I just figured it out!!! After singing the song in my head a couple times, it dawned on me that the Hokey-Pokey is all about trial and error!!! Think about it…you put all those parts in, only to find that they don’t work, and you keep turning yourself around and starting over…such is life!!! 5 years ago

I was watching a DVD of the British comedy, As Time Goes By, last night and was at the scene where Lionel and Jean are trying to figure out how many people they can get into their living room. They get Sandy and Judy to join them in a circle and Judy says, this is like the hokey cokey (which we have learned on this list is the British way of saying hokey pokey). I have seen this scene a number of times (I love the series) and my mind has always heard “hokey pokey” but this time I really listened and replaid it and voila it’s cokey. More proof it is really what it is all about when you can twist what you hear..denying reality I guess : )

I think it is all about turning things inside out…
if your shirt is inside out, you put your hand in you grab the end of the shirt and you pull your hand out, once it is like that if you shake it all around then… the sleeves (if short) will get fixed too… if the sleeves are long then you may have to do all the put your hand in and hand out and shaking all around all over again… this time in the sleeves.
It works for socks and pants as well….

I am completing a dual doctorate (psychology and hokeypokeyology, which have a lot of similarities) and am writing my dissertation on the “psychology of hokey pokey dancers” and am concluding that this IS what it’s all about…One interesting thing I turned up in my research is that hokey pokey has spread to other countries. For example, here’s the chorus as sung in Europe:

If this so called certified HokeyPokeyologist has true credentials.
Shouldn’t he be along the people who’ve “done this”?
He is still trying to figure it out.

It is VERY clear that with all the hokeing and poking and shaking all about around here… you will be soon singing, I love You, You love me, we are a happy family!!!
And then what it is next?... there was an old lady who lived in a shoe… she had so many children she did not know what to do?...I tell you people…I live in a shoe, I know, all the hokeing and Pokeing sometimes is better to wait, you better watch out you better not pout you better watch out I’m telling you why…
Santa Clause is coming to town…not very soon mind you, it is still summer , so I guess it is ok if you want to keep doing the Hokey Pokey just have some precautions please. 5 years ago
