I have the motherboard, the Shuttle kit, and selling my internal harddrive for a 500gb model. Next is a processer and RAM.

It pwns nubs hardcore, only complementing my skills. :)

Little advice, buy a barebones kit if your at all unsure about anything. That way you know everything will work. Remember 2 heads are better then one when piecing together something like this. As far as static electricity goes, If you want go ahead and take the precautions but I can tell you that I didn’t. Even when I took apart my Laptop then I was on a carpet and it still works fine! Even Professionals don’t use them. But hey it’s all up to you…

Had a few problems building, but I got it all together and anything that didn’t work was upgradable.

Do damn satisfying hearing the first sounds from windows vista!!!

I'm building another one! 2 years ago

After 8 years the components have changed A LOT. I’m going to need to gen up on the latest chipsets, processors, memory technologies, and so on before I start this. I need to find out what is compatible with what.

I don’t know whether to go for the Intel Core 2 Duo, the Pentium D, or the AMD Athlon. I’m not that bothered about price & I want something that will still support the latest software in 5 years time. I’ll be doing some internet research on this for a couple of weeks I think.

I built my PC in 1998 so it’s quite a while ago now. It’s still working. Since then I’ve gone through another PC (bought 2nd hand) which died after about 3 years with a motherboard problem so I dug out my old self-built one. It still works just fine! It’s a bit too slow by today’s standards. The processor is ancient (AMD K6), but apart from that it is working 100%. It’s the one I’m using now.

I’m very overdue for another PC but though I’d like to build one I don’t have the time at the moment. I’m just buying a complete system “off the shelf”. Maybe when my next one is due I’ll do it again.

Changed to build a small form factor PC and run Linux.

it's really not so hard... 2 years ago

I had a case from a machine I built a few years ago, and built a second computer with a new hard drive, processor, graphics card, and RAM. I need to add a second hard drive and maybe reformat b/c my system partition is just a wee bit too small!

    Worth doing... 2 years ago

if only for the challenge. The resulting machine is still running (albeit upgraded with more ram etc) 3 years later.

I wasn't good at it. 3 years ago

The PC I built was never as reliable as those I’ve bought fully built.

Upgrading various components (hard-drives, DVD-RW units, etc.) is simple. Building from scratch seemed easy, but I was never happy with the resulting machine.
