How to get an IUD"After 3 years, I'm finally getting one and I couldn't be happier!"
How I did it: I went to my doctor for a routine check-up and mentioned I was interested in birth control since I've never used any other than condoms. He asked what I was interested in and I told him the IUD Paragard. He tried to persuade me to get the vaginal ring, but I insisted I didn't want to have anything to do with hormones, no matter how small a dose. So we agreed to the IUD and I'm getting it put in in 3 days! Lessons & tips: Do your research, make sure the IUD is what you really want. Don't let the doctor talk you into something else. Resources: Here is a website where you take a questionnaire that helps you choose the right BC and learn about different options. http://www.arhp.org/crc/ Did you know the IUD is the most used form of birth control in the world? The US is a country that uses it the least! It's by far the most economical form of BC. There are 2 types of IUD in America. One being Mirena that used hormones and can be in for up to 5 years, and Paragard that uses copper wire that can be in for up to 10 years. The copper wire form is 99.2%-99.8% effect. After sterilization, the copper IUD is the most effective form of birth control available and it's reversible.

How I did it: I think in the UK it is easier than in the US. I just went to my clinic and asked for it and they fitted it the same day.I went to a place where they did a local anaesthetic and they said they thought that was more effective than anaesthetic gel, but some places don't have the training to do anaesthetics.I did a lot of controlled breathing while they were doing it, that helped. How I did it: i finally got a Paragard. it took awhile between the ob/gyn consult, insurance approval, and insertion, but i'm done (i think) and happy so far. dilation and insertion were a bit painful and i felt sick immediately afterward, with lightheadedness, nausea, and low BP. i had pretty intense cramps for the three nights post-insertion. assuming i don't encounter any future problems like expulsion or intolerable periods,… Read how I did it…
How I did it: I went through a couple of offices before finding one that a) was willing to give an IUD to a young woman with no kids, and b) had an MD available for the procedure. My insurance company covered my IUD, but only if an MD did it. Making the appointment, signing the copay check, and calling my boyfriend to pick me up afterward took longer than the actual insertion. With a $55 copay for five years of birth control versus $10-20 per month for … Read how I did it…

i have an appointment to get Paragard today…i’m excited but nervous. hopefully i’ll be able to update soon with good news!
I got my paragard almost three years ago. My menstrual pain is greater than it was before (not saying much, since previously it was nonexistent), and the insertion hurt like hell, BUT it’s pretty much foolproof and I don’t have to think about birth control again until I’m 28. Life is good.
I got one at age 18, nulliparous, so it can be done although some US doctors blanch at it. The LJ group iud_divas is tremendously useful.
It hurt really bad when it was put in… cramps afterward were pretty bad. But I had vicadin from my root canal so it wasnt so bad… I got the Mirena

Well I”m on the IUS (Intrauterine System) where a small amount of hormone is released locally.
I don’t have to deal with any of the pesky side-effects of the pill.. no mood swings, no feeling like crap all month.
I never want children so I’m not really bothered about the tiny chance that it would create future birth complications after removal.
My insurance ends on Aug 1st… I met with the dr today… she said they had to order it (may take 2 weeks)... Hoping I can get it installed before the 1st… :)
I have my appointment to get it put in on the 30th. But I hate the Dr. that’s going to be doing it. He was an asshole to me about the whole thing. I’ll be happy to be done with it.
I have an appointment to have talk to a Dr. about it on the 23rd, wish me luck!
