I joined Toastmasters about a month ago and should be giving my first ‘ice breaker’ speech within the month. I am looking forward to it… Now if I can only figure out what I should use the time to talk about.

i think becoming a better public speaker is a really good goal i dont like speaking in front off people. i don’t like it at much i hate talking aloud and reading aloud in class. you need public speaking all though out school so i think now trying to get over it will help me alot. i don’t even like puting my hand up in class to answer and Qs because i don’t like it and i always worry about getting the answer wrong. i no it dosen’t matter if the anwser is wrong but i feel silly if it is. :(

I joined Toastmasters last year and it has really helped me. I cannot say I am totally over my stage fright, but I ALWAYS get up and give a good speech. By giving speeches that it was not the length of the speech nor the topic that gave me problems, but my problem was trusting myself. Now this is something else that I have to work on.

Another year in Toastmasters 1 month ago

Next Friday (Aug 28th) our local TM club starts up again for the fall season. I’m VP Education this year, the Keeper of the Schedule – in this case, VP stands for Very Patient and Very Persistent!

Personally I’ll be working on getting my ACS and ALB (which is actually the same as the “old” CL, which I already have, as well as the “new” Cl, but never mind.)

One of the most valuable pieces of advice I received was that the audience isn’t thinking about you, they’re thinking about themselves, their schedule and their lives. Remembering this allows you to remove the edge. Thinking about how ‘you’ personally sit in an audience texting people, reading e-mail or daydreaming and how little you’re keyed into the speaker allows you to relax. This gives you the foundation. Once you realize this, it then becomes the task of connecting with the audience and disconnecting them from their own fascinations and bringing them into yours. That’s the difference between an average okay public speaker and a great one.

I took a course put on by the Dale Carnegie School called “High Impact Presentations” that made all the difference and allowed me to beat my fears and frustrations with former performances.

clubcrackers too, too, too.

I failed 2 months ago

my last comm class because I stopped going after the first few weeks.

I’m that terrified of public speaking.

This time, I’m actually going to go. I’m going to take advantage of the class that I’m paying for. I’m going to (cough cough) become a better public speaker.

Cos I do actually have stuff to say, I’m just a nervous wreck about it.

Studying in an Asian school half of my life, I cannot believe how little they help you become a public speaker. You’re not allowed to talk to the teacher unless the teacher calls you out. I remember no presentations or classes to help me out with this. I might be blaming my education for my poor speech skills, but it really does scare me.

Books on self improvements don’t really help either. =(
