I see that I can hire a 4×4 locally with all camping equipment, bedding, unlimited milage etc for 2 persons for less than R700 (+- USD 100) a day. So I think I will go this route to start with and save myself the capital outlay, garaging dilemma of actually buying a vehicle. Also I can see if this is a fad for me or the real thing!
I want to do the round trip Durban [home] – Kimberly-Upington (South Africa) – Ais Ais-Windhoek-Etosha (Namibia) – Maun-Moremi-Chobe-Nata (Botswana)- Duban
No way parts of this trip can be done in a 2 wheel drive.
I live on a little farm now and use it every day, but I moved here from Dallas, TX, where I never left the pavement. Same vehicle. Used it to pull a friend’s Ford Excursion (yes, the really, really big one) out of the mud. I just turned over 100k miles and it has never left me stranded or stuck.
...... but I spend a lot of the time in the mountains and it’s pretty essential out there. To make up for that I work in public transport and take the train or bus everywhere when I’m in the city. Oh, and I can take all my friends in my 4×4 so they don’t pollute when we go away!
its the only way i’m going to be able to drive from cape to cairo. a normal 4×2 vehicle just won’t make it!
