Can't wait to move... 14 months ago

I grew up in MD and moved to NC about 13 years ago and I cannot express how much I hate living in the south. The people are warm and generous but the climate is just horrible for my allergies and I miss snow and cold weather. Would love to move home but can’t afford the cost of living difference.

Fell in love with the Pittsburgh area on a business trip a few years ago and now my husband and I are actively working towards moving there by 2010. I’m excited to see a site where people are happy about living in/moving to Pitt – being in the RDU area, I’m surrounded by people who’ve moved OUT of Pitt and think I’m crazy for wanting to move north.

The realty websites are a little overwhelming and I’m unsure about the neighborhoods…..we’d love to live as close to the city as possible w/o necessarily living downtown. My husband and I are in our early thirties with no kids and want a lively area near music and activities where we can still escape from work and have a relaxing atmosphere once we’re home. I’m hoping we can get some advice as to which areas would be best for the kind of lifestyle we’re seeking and get some inside dirt on living in PA!

Shockingly Surprising 16 months ago

When I moved to Pittsburgh, I had a list of places and people I knew would meet my needs for a happy, harmonious existence.

Over time, though, I discovered an immeasurable depth of resources, opportunities, and things of beauty. Yes, the job market is rough and our reputation is not for our progressiveness. But I’ve found these elements to increase the potential for creating change.

Amazing people are making amazing things happen in Pittsburgh. Your job as a Pittsburgher is to unearth them. The more you dig, the more gems you’ll find. The people who say there’s nothing going on here either aren’t really looking or don’t know what they’re looking for.

And the sports are bonus.

Our Move to Pittsburgh: A Rant

My husband and I (plus 2 cats and 2 dogs) will be making the drive to Pittsburgh with all of our worldly possessions on Friday. We are stopping to stay in a Kabin (spelling intentional!) in Kentucky before finishing the trip on Saturday.

The stress of packing up our lives and moving to another state has exceeded all of my expectations. I’m already freaking out about finding a job before our money runs low (hubby already has a job, which prompted the move). I don’t know anyone there. We are moving into a rental house, sight unseen. I totalled my car exactly 2 weeks before the move, so the stress of dealing with insurance, car salesmen, the bank, etc has been added onto the stress of finding a place to live long distance, get the utilities turned, find a new bank, plan the move and how to transport our things and our pets across the country.

I’ve wanted to leave Texas from the moment I moved there 4 years ago. I’m supposed to be enjoying this dammit! ;)

Pittsburgh bound 2 years ago

My boyfriend was accepted into Pitt law school for the fall semester, so we are moving sometime this summer. I need to find a job in the web design/graphic arts field, so if anyone has any ideas, please let me know! Also looking to rent an place that allows pets (I have a 7 year old black lab). Does anyone know any good resources for finding pet friendly rental properties in Pittsburgh?

Get my Boyfriend off his lazy bum and get a J-O-B! 2 years ago

My boyfriend hasn’t been working for the last 6 months. I have been doing it all!!! Bills are behind, we’ve had to postpone our trip to check out Pittsburgh ‘till April, and we may have to postpone it again or cut it short. But we will get to see my sister and Mom there. My sister has a volleyball tournament at the convention center there Easter weekend. This city (norfolk) is depressing. 2 weeks ago a body washed up on the beach a couple blocks down the street.
I just need to vent. We really want to get out of Norfolk. My boyfriend knows that if he doesn’t get a job now we won’t be able to afford to move. Bills are SO behind. But i just can’t kick him out. He would really have nowhere to go 300 miles from home. I think I may just cut off some stuff. Like using my car to look for a job….oh and he looks for a job 1 day a week. 2 if you count sitting on the couch calling to try to set up interviews.
I just don’t know what to do with him.
Oh, for anybody who’s got a cheer. I haven’t quite figured out to view the cheer comments so you can always email me @

Grew up in Philly...living in Norfolk for the last 2 years 2 years ago

My boyfriend and I grew up in the ‘burbs of Philly. I got a job trnasfer and we moved to Noroflk, VA…..hate it here! I miss Pa so much. We didn’t like our hometown anymore, thought the beach might be a nice change. Well, the beach is the only good thing down here! I love Pa so much. We are big on camping and hiking, etc. We will be moving to Pittsburgh on October ‘07 and I can’t wait! We’ve heard so many good things! We will be visiting in March and late August to find a place to live there. Rent is so cheap, I’ve already started looking. Here’s to hoping we don’t have trouble finding jos or a place to live. Also, hope we don’t catch too much slack for being Eagles and Flyers fans. I hear the Penguins might be moving to Kansas or Texas.

When you want something this bad, it has to happen 2 years ago

Pittsburgh. I can’t wait. It’s been a dream of mine to move there for years, and hopefully as soon as I finish my MBA, I can.

It’s such a beautiful city. Wonderful neighborhoods where you can have a small-town feel, but you don’t have to give up the energy and life of a city.

And the people are so nice!

Moving to Pittsburgh... 3 years ago

My wife and I have been working on this goal for 2+ years now—and we’re about to close on a HUGE, gorgous house next week! It’s a dream come true. If you want to buy a 6-bedroom brick victorian for under $150,000 in a beautiful city neighborhood a few blocks from a huge city park and a few miles from the center of downtown? Move to Pittsburgh!

I’m from Pittsburgh originally, I have been away for 15 years, but now I’m coming “home,” finally! I can’t help but feel like it’s a well-kept secret. I never thought I’d move back but I really do love the city itself and all it has to offer, arts/culture and it’s underrecognized beauty, including a slower paced life.

I’ve been in DC for 8+ years and I’m so sick and tired of the people, the congestion, the heat, the high cost of living, the politics—pretty much everything. Pittsburgh is just so much more down to earth than DC, then again, most places are.
