I did eventually get there, but I ended up cutting it all off in Oct ‘07 to below my chin. It’s about to bra strap length again and I havent had it cut in a very long while (I never get round to doing it) so inadvertently I am growing it again!
How to grow my hair to hip length
How I did it: Kept my hair well moisturized, stopped using silicones. I also switched to every other day Conditioner Only method washing and reduced using shampoo to about once per week; more or less depending on weather, or if I felt my hair needed the extra bit of cleansing from shampoo. Invested in a good seamless wide-tooth comb and use it before brushing; always combing from the tips upward to work out tangles. Once tangles are gone then brush from roots to tips a few times. I also invested in lots of hair toys - hair sticks, flexi-8's, clips etc. and learned to do a lot of new styles. Keeping hair up not only protects it but keeps you from focusing on how long it is, or isn't! And the biggest thing - DIDN'T CUT IT!
Lessons & tips: Your hair is a reflection of your health - if you eat a healthy balanced diet it will show in your hair. Drink plenty of water and eat a healthy diet. Don't heat style or chemically treat your hair, don't cut it if you want it to grow. The myth is you have to cut it to grow it - but that's not true. You WILL need regular trims if your hair is in bad condition and has a lot of splits/breakage - but if you take good care of your hair you won't have the breakage/splits and trims will be a thing of the past. Find what your hair type is (link in resources) and then learn how to properly care for it. It may take a couple months of experimenting but once you find products and methods that work for you it's totally worth it!

My favorite products are VO5 Passionfruit Smoothie conditioner, The Goth Rosary Daily Hair Conditioner & Humectant, Mane & Tail Shampoo, coconut oil, Conair In Shower Comb, Ketylo hair sticks, and Flexi-8 hair clips.

Granted my hair grows in a deep U hemline (bordering on a V) so it’s only the longest part that’s almost there. But… that counts… right? :p

Up-dos are becoming my friend – if my hair is up I’m not really focusing on how long (or short :p) it is. I’m out of my cold weather stall and am so close to waist length I can hardly stand it. My wurls are more unpredictable every day and I’ve finally found just the right ratio of water to conditioner for my mister bottle. With a little misting and some scrunching I can keep my wurls pretty all day long. The above pic is after misting & scrunching to revive my wurls in the evening.
I’ve given up on the tape measure though, because of the wurls. Some days my hair is 1b straight, most days it’s 2c/3a wurls but because of the different wave/curl patterns I can get anything from 24 to 27 inches on the tape measure. So no more measuring… just taking good care of my hair and waiting till it hits my hips even on my wurliest days.
I’ve also decided I’m going to give the Morrocco Method a try for a couple months. I’ve heard some people swear it works, and others who are incredibly skeptical about it. I’m going in with the mindset that it’ll work. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see.
Either way, I will reach waist length + this year. Slowly but surely inching my way to hip. Patience is not one of my strengths but as I said, up-dos are becoming my friend. Having lots of pretty hair toys (especially Ketylos!) is helping me to stick with this though, because I know if my hair is shorter I can’t use them and I can’t do the pretty styles I can do now. Though I can’t do a lot of pretty styles I have seen at LHC because while my hair has the length for some of them, it’s just too thick and I need a lot more length before I can do them. So that gives me something to look forward to, as well.
i was at hip length last week, but after my trim on tuesday my hair went back from 34 to 31 inches… so it’s just below waist length again.
but my hip length measures at 33 inches so i’ll be there soon.

I changed my goal from “waist length” to hip length. My hair still isn’t anywhere close to waist length yet but I’ve already decided that goal just isn’t long enough! It’s been waist length before but I never felt that was “long” so I’d like to go for something longer.
I started out at 16 inches, and am currently at 23 inches – just above BSL. I’ve changed up my routine a lot. My hair is doing much better with the new routine, and I’ve only been doing it for 2 weeks so I am still in the adjusting period. My hair has jumped from 1b to 2b/2c – I am hoping once my hair has completely adjusted I’ll be a 3a. I’ve ditched brushes in favor of a good quality wide-tooth comb, given up cones, traded in regular shampoo for good shampoo bars, and have taken up nightly oiling. I don’t shampoo daily anymore; I use the shampoo bars (followed by conditioner) every other day, and the days in between I CO wash.
My hair was in extremely good condition already because I only very rarely heat style (maybe four or five times per year, if that) and I don’t dye or otherwise chemically treat my hair in any way. But it has still improved significantly since changing my routine, and I’m very happy with it! Will be even happier once it’s nice and long!
I’ve been trying to take better care of my hair so that I can have healthy long hair.
I’ve stopped using commerical shampoo and conditioner. My hair seems to love that.
I’m also using a wide toothed wooden comb and a boar bristle brush. I’m trying not to put things into my hair that will cause it to break or split.
Massaging my scalp seems to be helping my rate of growth.
My only problem at present is that my scalp seems to be getting crusty/itchy quite a bit. I guess I need to salt scrub it more often.
Right now it seems to be below my shoulder blades which I think may be the longest I’ve ever had it.
Actually my great grandmother had hip length hair and I just wanted to carry on the tradition. “Kinda Cool.”
