My room is a bit cramped so having a chalkboard will make it dustier than usual. I’d still want to have one, in the kitchen perhaps, when I have my own place someday. :)

it was much easier than I originally thought. just had to tape off and surround the covering area, then spray spray away. the spray paint left a nice even finish in a rich black. it looks so great and it’s the perfect place to write daily lists! (I’m such a list addict)

bought chalkboard paint today! was looking for the kind to roll on, but they didn’t have any, so I settled with the spray. This could prove troublesome. will have to do some heavy duty taping off and covering up.

we had a chalkboard wall. Green paint, covered the bottom half of the lathe-and-plaster wall. The other three walls were wood paneling we couldn’t afford to replace, so we painted those white and I used the vertical lines to define the sides of comic-strip panels—Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes, Bloom County and one other…can’t remember, but it was mostly single-panel comics. Anyway, the comics were aligned along the top of the panels and irregular widths and heights. Along the top I had planned to use sponge-cut letters H and A to run HAHAHAHA in multicolors all the way around the room.

But back to the chalkboard. My eldest was just learning to read, so every night after he went to bed I’d draw a picture and write a little saying on the chalkboard. It might say, “Being good at something means you can help other people get better,” with a couple of just-slightly-better-than-stick figures representing Seth helping Braden (his little brother) build a block tower or whatever. Every morning Seth would run to read it out loud and explain it to Braden. Then they’d erase it and draw all over the chalkboard.

When the babysitter came, she left notes on the chalkboard for me.

The other day I was in the Habitat store here, and they had chalkboard paint in green and black for $2.50/can. I bought one of each. Seth’s favorite color is black, Braden’s is green. I’m going to let them paint their closet doors. Nate will want to do his, too. I’m hoping Miss Anna won’t, because I spent so much energy and time on her very pretty little princess room…

You know, there’s another really cool paint. Last I checked it wasn’t available in the US yet but you can order it online from Canada if you live in the States. It has finely ground metal in it—so that magnets stick to it! Is that cool or what?

I have dreams of an enormous black chalkboard in my kitchen, full of doodles and lists and thoughts… so fun! and chalkboard paint is really cheap, easy, and versatile! a perfectly funky decorating solution.
