How I did it: I called around to every estate planning attorney within about 45 minutes (there were 8). I asked for a price for a will, living will, and power of attorney. I wrote down each one's name and price, then looked on the Florida Bar website to make sure the one I went with was a real lawyer and everything.

It was $225 for all 3 documents. From my initial calling around to the actual having it finalized has taken 3 weeks because my particular situation wasn't as cut and dried as it could have been and we had to make some phone calls in the family which took extra time.

Now I am really happy I did this instead of walking around pretending nothing could possibly happen. I hadn't even formulated the idea that something could happen to both me & my husband, or my whole little family of 3. I feel much better having my wishes of where my daughter should reside in the event of a catastrophy, to make sure certain relatives cannot get and ruin yet another child in my family. And to make sure the family I built is provided for, when there are people in the family who would have rather taken everything from them and had it themselves.

Life is dangerous enough just getting out of bed, and I want to go skydiving again and do all kinds of other potentially hazardous things, so it was really stupid of me to wait until I'm almost 26 to do this, but at least I acted like an adult (for once.. haha) and came off the $225 to do this.

Also, I am getting a huge kick out of having done something so responsible, so its more bang for the buck. :P And being able to put it on my "things I've done" list and write this entry is just the icing on the cake! Read how I did it… 14 months ago
