I plan to live in the area after I graduate. I want to get started on my nest/artist commune/tiny-shack-of-people-who-love-each-other as soon as possible. I’m also not a huge fan of dorm life.
How to live off-campus
How I did it: The first task was deciding just how far we wanted to live from campus as we were still full-time students when we decided to move off campus. So, we began by asking others on and off campus where nice reasonable apartments could be found within 6-7 miles of campus. Then we checked the local newspapers and posted our need on bulletin boards in local grocery stores, party stores, and anywhere a posting could be made. We even asked the local postal employees and gas station cashiers. Of course, we thought our professors' residences were far out of our range so we only asked our philosophy professor who always looked as if his circumstances were much like those of a student anyway. As the suggestions came in and we made our selections from the newspapers, we began our search in earnest.
Lessons & tips: Only get a place that you can afford and one that is in a safe neighborhood, and meets your personal taste and needs. And, of course, be careful of the distance from campus if you are still in school.
Resources: Newspapers, apartment guidebooks, friends, library, apartment-find.com (or similiar website in your area)

I asked my friend if she would like to live off-campus with me, and she said yes. At first I wanted to move off next semester and she wanted to move off the following year, but now we both want to move off next semester, so that makes things a lot easier. We’re having dinner tomorrow night to discuss how we will achieve this goal!
