I have decided not to give this one up…
Even tho my hip hurts (damn bursitis) I am still pursing this. I am back to the drawing board….
How I did it: I used Hal Higdon's novice training program (easy to find online with a quick google search). The program takes 12 weeks and works you up gradually from 3 miles to 10 - Race day is the first day you go the full 13.1, he includes how the adrenaline and energy of the event will take you the extra 3.1. I can’t run. I believe my body is not made to run.

I ran the “proper way” last night. I was right when I said it was back to the drawing board. I could only do it for one mile. Plus, I am still sore from pulling weeds! I am getting old.

So yeah. I am not a runner by any means. My best friend (Julie) ran the PF Changs 1/2 marathon this past January. It was great cheering her on from the sidelines. (Not so great hearing her complain for months when she was training.)
It wasn’t until her dad basically told me he didn’t think I could run one. Well, that is all it took. I went from only walking briskly to running 2 miles at a time. (On a treadmill, I have yet to venture into the wild.)
Now I was doing wonderfully…until two days ago. My back started to hurt. To my dismay I was informed that I did not have the proper running form. I was leaning forward, instead of keeping my posture in check. Oh the agony. Yesterday I tried running “properly”, only to discover that I can’t do it without my ass sticking out.
Its back to the drawing board.
I just decided to do this about 5 seconds ago.
I love running. I used to be a huge runner. Then I got Mono, got the crap kicked out of me by it, and three years later I’m just getting back into the swing of things. Took me a full year before I had any real energy. Now I can run about 1 1/2 miles before needing to walk. I also need better shoes, as my beat up old ones bruised my toe, which is, well, no bueno.
My only real obstacle is my back. I have slipped disk so I want to get all of that checked out before I potentially make it worse.
But anyway, this is my goal. The second the idea occurred, it made complete sense, not sure why, but it does. So there. I have to get the basics going, and then figure out what coast I’ll be on (I split time between CA and MA), although I’m thinking maybe San Francisco would be a good place. Then I could make all my friends come and cheer me on and get some good Chinese food after :). Plus they do an actual marathon, I’m sure they have a half somewhere in there.
I just turned 30 years old and this has recently been one of my goals in life that I’ve thought about for the past 5 years. One day, I’ll make it happen!
i use to be an avid runner but i decided to focus on soccer instead. now that i quit soccer, i’m ready to get back in the habit of runnning and the best way to do this is to set a goal and work towards it. i’m shooting for the seattle half marathon on november 30. i have maybe ran twice in the last 3 weeks so i’ll need to up my milage in order to prepare of the race which is in three months.
ready, set, run!!!
la_chica misses riding the el.
Let me not forget that I have run probably 3 training runs at and over the 1/2 marathon distance. So let me up the ante and state I’ve run 6 half marathons. I am champion!!!
