Stop neglecting things in fridge. 10 months ago

Check your fridge before going ahead with buying.
Cook the older once first.
Check your fridge every Thursday.
Clean your fridge every Sunday.
Don’t let food get rotten due to prolonged storage.

the fridge 16 months ago

this is getting a little better. i’ve been looking a little more carefully at what we have in the fridge before making dinner. (instead of grabbing the most recent grocerey purchase to cook.) it’s so easy to overlook stuff that’s in tupperware!

pretty consistent 18 months ago

i’ll probably reopen it when i go back to school because it’s a problem there. but done for now.

one goal spawns another 18 months ago

i started this goal at school and was pursuing 2 basic principles: that i would not throw away WELL PREPARED food that I LIKED. i decided not to blame myself if i didn’t like it. this was hard at school, where it’s buffet-style and not all stuff i know (and not all good) and the only thing i could do was take smaller portions and go for seconds. but at home it’s much easier because i can do leftovers and the mulch pile. on the other hand food sometimes goes bad in the fridge because my mom buys more than the two of us can eat. i’ll have to work on her… also, maybe i can try to make a mulch pile at school when get back…

Such a shame 21 months ago

“Americans waste 27% of their food – throwing out 365 pounds of food per year for every man, woman, and child…Even 5% of the 96 billion pounds of edible food tossed out annually in this country could feed 4 million people a day for a year.”

Wow! I know my family is guilty of this. We tend to overbuy and the food ends up going bad before we get to eat it. This is such a waste of money and resources. I think of the energy and materials that were used to make/package the food and it makes me sad to think that it was for nothing.

I’m going to make an effort to buy only what we need and be resourceful with what we have in the kitchen!

it helps when... 3 years ago

I have a plan. I’ve decided that Monday is grocery day and I can go and get groceries for the week. It helps when I have a goal to finish things by – like strawberries, or any produce really. This also has an added benefit, it gets me eating healthier.

getting better... 3 years ago

at this. I hate seeing things in my fridge that are rotten. Imagine if that food was in Africa, I bet it wouldn’t be rotting. And leftovers that just sit there. I think I have this hang-up about emptying bags – like I can’t get more. Or I get tired of eating the same thing, so it wastes. I’m getting over this though, just gotta change the way I think – give myself a cheer whenever I finish something!
