in our small group who is reading it. He is a PhD candidate in something hard and is still reading this. I’m inspired. Maybe this summer…
How I did it: Over winter break, I decided I wanted to read it, so I made time to do so. Unfortunately, I didn't finish over break and I had to return the book to the library. However, I did download a pdf of an english translation and that's how I finished it. Read how I did it…

I finally got around to finishing this book. I had gotten most of the way through the book (about 10 chapters left) when break ended and since then, it’s been rough getting the time to finish it. But I did.
I really enjoyed the book, but there was a lot I did not understand. Why was the illusha story in there? Why was there so much court stuff? Excellent dialogue and a pretty solid plot, albeit long.

This book will survive the “read every book I own or else (or else it’s gone).” I have the norton edition with footnotes. I’m for sure keeping it.
I’ve read about 230 of 775, which is a pretty decent chunk. I really want to finish this before my winter break ends, because I’m afraid I won’t have the time for it when I return to school.
So far, I’ve been really enjoying it. The plotting is fantastic—so many threads woven so well together! Of course, the characterization and dialogue are excellent. As the critic who wrote my introduction pointed out, Dostoevsky crafts independent and separate characters, not just different manifestations of the author. It’s both dreadfully slow and blazing fast.
Here’s to finishing a classic!

Part one is “in the books”. I absolutely love the dialogue… Man, can those Karamazovs talk for a long time without being interrupted!

After a slow start, I’m now about a quarter of the way through. The dialogue is truly spectacular…

Next step? Let the reading begin!

with her quest to read Gone with the Wind in 21 days or less. This might be something I need to just pump myself up for and plow through. I can’t do it now, with my class work, but if all goes well, I can finish my classwork by Thanksgiving, and then maybe I’ll try to read it over Christmas break….

Scott, my philosopher friend recommended this book to me today and I’ve now got to read it!
I finally finished The Brothers Karamazov. And it only took me five months to do it. Yes, it’s a big book, but it took so long because I would set it aside for weeks at a time. If I am going to complete my 19th Century Russian Reading List this year I am going to have to pick up the pace.
But I am content at the moment. I have finished the first of 2008’s goals and at least one more will be completed in about 11 days.
