How to fix my computer"It's more of a way of life than a one-shot deal."
How I did it: Lots and lots of Googling, practice, trial and error, speaking to professional technicians-- pretty much the same way most any tech does it. See my "become a computer technician" goal if you're wondering on some of the particulars. Lessons & tips: Shop around. Learn which manufacturers are reliable, and which aren't. Buying online is helpful, particularly if the distributor is located near you. Newer is not always better. As a Linux user, I had to get a particular older card to get sound working (does sound mixing directly through the hardware). Resources: NewEgg |

How I did it: The fan on my video card was loose and consequently ridiculously loud. I replaced my noisy/old Nvidia Geforce 7600gs with Geforce 9800GX2 - tasty. I also needed a new power supply to support the beastly card. I'm broke, but content. Read how I did it…

So I bit the bullet and made the “please help me” phone call.
The techno-doc will be stopping by tomorrow after work. I’m grateful as usual. He shunned my offer of the financial variety, but we may force a humble pizza pie upon him.
Hopefully I’ll be back up and running by this time tomorrow. Hopefully it’s something simple. Something in the “oh look, your hard drive is perfectly fine, this thingamajig just wasn’t attached properly” variety.

My computer decided to go on the fritz last night. We’d driven it out to have the sound checked and the new ram installed (it’s a weird mini ibm that only my tech guy knows how to deal with). He gave me a LCD monitor he wasn’t using too, which will take up much less space. I was keen to get home and have things working and up to speed. The problem was, when I plugged everything in & tried to boot up, the fan went on, but nothing else. Zip.
Fortunately I’d backed up most of the system and managed to get the laptop online just now (after a rather lengthy chat with Troubleshooter Man at my server’s hotline). It will suffice for now, but there are things I need to access on the other system.
So… this returns to my list yet again.
I look forward to someday having a system that runs smoothly. Online. With sound. We’ll be setting up wireless at the new place too, so that’ll be nice, we can network all the computers.
Until I can wrangle one of my favorite geeks to help me with these things, I’ll have to make do with the laptop. Very grateful to have it.

Shortly after my last entry, my computer crapped out. I thought I’d fried the hard drive and lost a pile of data, but eventually I managed to boot it up in safe mode, breathed a huge sigh of relief when I could access all my files and promptly set about backing them all up.
The last couple of days were spent making sure I had everything moved to the external hard drive and then trying to get the system running normally again. I can’t remember the last time I went so long without being online, having access to my regular programs, e-mail, or being able to unload my camera.
I eventually gave up and called my computer tech friend (I try to be sparing in my help requests, but it wouldn’t budge) and he was over within a couple of hours and had the problem licked before sundown. Relief relief relief.
I’m too exhausted to catch up now, but I’m very glad to be back up and running, and I’m grateful I didn’t lose anything and that I have such terribly clever friends that will come to my rescue.
So, the computer I’m on now is a small 8” Asus that I bought once my other laptop broke. Don’t get me wrong, I love this little guy but I do miss my bigger 15” one every now and then. My cousin’s Rottweiler jumped on my other laptop and smashed the LCD screen. I was so upset because it was a really nice computer and the first expensive thing I bought for myself. I didn’t think the screens were replaceable but I found a place online that has them for about $99. The instructions didn’t look too difficult, either. I have had it hooked up to a big monitor for a while after that, so it still works great. It does need a new battery, too. I hope to fix this soon because I was planning on using that laptop for school…

The AC adapter is now repaired.
The touchpad is only working on occasions, but I don’t care.
I’m working on the battery for now. I looked on almost everything I could do by myself… so I think I’ll go for professional help next week.
