How to move to Toronto
How I did it: It was extremely useful to move to a city where I have friends of friends that were willing to help me migrate.
Lessons & tips:
- Move during the summer!
- Save enough money to live without a job for a good 2-3 months, so you can get to know the city well and find a job.
- Plan a trip to Canada during the winter so you know what life is like.
- Do share with friends, acquaintances, even strangers about your plans to move, and they may know people you can connect to once you are in the country. I've found Canadians are extremely friendly and nice and always willing to help.

Goonerball I'm Ron Burgundy?
I only put this goal in here as a laugh, ages ago but it looks like it could actually happen! 3 of my friends and one of their girlfriends could be moving there next year! If I can get a transfer to the Toronto branch of my company then I can get sponsored by my uncle and live there! If I can’t do that I might sell the BMW and pay for a graphic design course over there!
So, tomorrow I sign the contract which gets me to Canada – my company sorts out all the immigration and stuff like that. It’ll be all set out in black and white with the necessary signatures and everything. A new life is waiting for me – but I’m going to make the most of my current one for the next 2 months til I leave.
So my the various elements involved in deciding my transfer have muddled the dates, so my departure is delayed by a week. No real effect, but I do wish they could have settled on it from the start – it has left me feeling a little unsettled. Still, all is progressing nicely apart from this.
So, it’s all arranged. It’s taken 3 years of (mostly) hard work at my current job, 6 months of persuasion and discussion with my company & 1 week-long preview trip to Canada to be sure I liked it (I do).
Now I just need to see and sign the final version of my new contract, and I will be officially moving from the UK to Toronto in early November. I am sad to be leaving behind all my friends and family, but this is a fantastic opportunity for me to build a new and shinier life with more snowboarding and less Woking (the highly objectionable town in Surrey, UK where I have worked for the last three years).
I moved here in April 2008 from Melbourne Australia. The timing was perfect weather wise as I missed the fierce winter they just had. The locals are friendly and it’s very easy getting around, i didn’t have much trouble getting a job or finding a place although there are a lot of bums/beggers around which takes a bit of getting used to. We’ll see how i survive this winter!
toronto has schools that have Video Game Design and Development programs. i want to do this if the Graphic Design thing doesn’t go anywhere.
laura wants me to move to toronto with her in three years after we are both done school. i think that’d be neat.
time to start now, time is wasting. 16 (almost 17) years old stuck in hicktown bible belt tennessee, i turn 18 next year and that’s when i’m moving. Yeah, only 1 year and 5 months left. I need to get a job anywhere and save plenty of money. I’m tired of living here. marrying my girlfriend some time after i’ve stayed there as a “tourist” and then applying for permanent residence with her sponsoring me as a spouse.
