I’ve been going out in the sun more ofter this week, about 4 times so far. I’ve avoided burning, which is great. I keep my aloe vera gel close, as well as Benadryl allergy pills. I get a bad histamine reaction that makes my sun-exposed skin itch to the point where I just want to rip my skin off, it’s horrible. I’m pretty sure it has to do with my birth control pills… something about hormones. But the antihistamines help wonders :) So I’ll tan away and always use sunscreen. I’m planning a beach trip with some friends in a few weeks, so that should make me a lot darker afterwards. Maybe I’ll bring 15 spf instead of 8…
I’m pretty pale, deathly pale if I don’t go outside for a while to the point where I can see right through my skin in a translucent kind of way (kind of creepy, hehe). I’ve never been dark, but I accept it, because it’s not in my genes. However, there is a good benefit to getting some sun. It’s been proven that about 10 mins a day of sun exposure is enough to make your body produce vitamin D, which you do need to stay healthy. Everything in moderation is my personal rule.
The best thing to do is to gradually, slowly build up your skin’s natural defenses against the sun. Use good sunscreens that protect against BOTH UVA and UVB rays. My favorite tanning sunscreen is Banana Boat, the brown tube, with 8spf, green tea extracts. It smells like bananas, doesn’t get oily and dries fast. I start with 30 min on each side, and gradually stay longer once I start getting darker.
Tanning is essencially the same damage as a sunburn, just more subtle. It signals the pigment cells in your skin (melanocytes) to start producing more melanin, which is the color you get when you tan (and also the freckles). It prevents the sun from penetrating the skin as easily as it could beforehand. However, your skin renews itself approximately every 30-35 days, so tanning is a contiuous process.
And as always, the safest thing to do once you decide to get doses of UV rays is to see a dermatologist if you see anything, Anything that looks suspicious…
Most freckles are ok, I have tons on my shoulders.
Also, sun exposure makes your skin age faster, especially for light skinned people. So I don’t want to overdo it. I’m white, and I can never look like those dark caribbean or brazilian women without the likely event of skin cancer… It’s not worth it.
emilydenicola is finishing reflections... sort of.
I worked in the sun for like six hours. I got sunburn on my upper back, and a little bit tanner on my arms and chest. Now for the rest of my body!

I’ve started sitting in the sun on my lunch break.
It’s helping, but I need to start cycling to really get tan.

As you can see from my picture, i have a very bad farmers tan…
I spend alot of time outside, during the hot sunny part of the day, and i cant take my shirt off during that period considering there are dress codes. Is it pointless to try to get rid of my bad tanlines if i have to wear a shirt outside more often than i can be outside without one?
Either way i have started to tan outside using a tanning lotion…i only put it on the areas that are white…is it hopeless?
