Malinda Lo’s updated version of Cinderella. A darkly engaging re-imagining of such a classic fairytale with a cool twist. Catergorized as Young Adult fiction, I nevertheless enjoyed this telling. 8 months ago

Carol Anshaw’s funny take on family dysfunction, mother-daughter relationships and the many ways we betray each other and more often ourselves. Very good writing and interesting characters and story. I recommend it. 8 months ago
Lisa Kogan, of “O” magazine fame, unleashes her brand of self-deprecating and wry observational humor on a variety of topics. Definitely likely to be more interesting to women, but a funny and fast read for 30-somethings +. 8 months ago
Roda Jantzen’s hilarious memoir about how her oddball family, friends and mennonite heritage informed her growth during some of life’s biggest disappointments and trials. 8 months ago
This was a read for the LGBT reading group at the local bookstore. It was…uh…sad? Very well written, but very cool/distant and heavy…which since it is about the death of a teenager/brother/true story…makes sense but damn…I need a laugh now. 10 months ago
story about women pilots in WWII who flew not in combat but in supply missions and test pilots. cool. 11 months ago
More lgbt fiction/romance. cute but predictable story. liked that it addresses some autism issues. 11 months ago
In the Moon Island series. LGBT Romance. Good read, I may check out the rest of the series. 11 months ago
LGBT Fiction. Interesting read about college basketball star’s rising maturity on and off the court and how it impacts her romantic relationships as she falls in love for the first time, but has many different types of “love” in her circle of friends. Surprisingly good. 11 months ago
LGBT fiction. This one was different, it followed the arch of a relationship that was pretty much doomed from the start and one character’s decline into mental illness. Surprisingly interesting. 11 months ago
LGBT mystery/romance. Pretty witty dialogue and fun characters. I generally don’t really like mysteries as I don’t find them particularly well crafted and I don’t like having to wait for the author to give you clues….lol 11 months ago
Short memoir of growing up in boys body and struggling with internal and external issues around gender and sexuality. Amusing anecdotes but surprisingly (to me anyway) there wasn’t much “meat” or intellectual power in this story which I think would’ve helped me enjoy it more. Read this one for a book group I am going to attend and check out. I had heard of Mx Bond before. He sounds interesting, but the reviews oversell it. 13 months ago
This was gifted to me by Joanne Kung-Vincett last summer. Great read about one woman’s journey to provide enterprises for the poorest of poor to take ownership and create income.I really enjoyed this and the anecdote about the blue sweater is exceptionally touching. 14 months ago
Really good e-book that was a surprise. It is about 9 survivors of a plane crash and what happens during the 15 months of their separation from their lives and how they try to assimilate when they return. I thought the characters were believable and the relationships well drawn. Diverse characters and also depiction of same gender relationships so be warned if that isn’t your thing.
I read it online at: http://www.academyofbards.org/fanfic/k/kimpritekel_1049club1.html 15 months agoThe final book in the Hunger Games trilogy. Wow. Really great read though I’ve never been a sci-fi fan. I’m now looking forward to the movies… 15 months ago
The second book in Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy. I like the main characters and the suspense. Some of the twists you don’t see coming. Fun. 16 months ago
Book one of post apocalypse, young adult trilogy. Gripping adventure and suspense. Likable protagonists. Looking forward to book two. 16 months ago
Mindy Kaling’s funny memoir about her journey to becoming a tv writer for the hit show “The Office”. Part chic lit, part parody and all silly. Quick and fun. This was a holiday gift. 16 months ago
One of best books I’ve read in a while. I didn’t want it to end and I really have enjoyed this second book by de los Santos. Her first book was really good as well, but this one really kicked it up a notch. 16 months ago
Bich Minh Nguyen’s memoir of coming of age as a vietnamese immigrant in 1980’s Michigan. Focus on food, family dynamics and the tension between country of origin and new homeland. Interesting and descriptive. Sad and funny, honest. 16 months ago
Another David Sedaris classic. Hilarious social commentary on the ills if human nature via the stories of anthropomorphized animals. Quick, lite, fun. 17 months ago
My first Jodi Picoult book. It was really good. Character development was cool because the story is told from 3 people’s perspectives. Lots of political issues around marriage, divorce, religion, sexuality, family and fertility. 17 months ago
Inspiring true story of FDNY firefighter who was hit by a bus biking to a workout. This amazing man and spirit chronicles his comeback from a gruesome accident, detailing the trauma, surgeries and emotional work it took to get him to the start of the marathon 3 years after his accident. Amazing. 17 months ago
Hilarious mini-memoire by Maxim Writer Justin Halpern after the wildly successful twitter account of the same name accrued over a million followers…this book is a sweet and salty account of his relationship with his father. Laugh out loud funny. 17 months ago
Cute, chick lit. Not something I’d usually read, but a compelling jacket cover description of a woman who in a drunken daze, accidentally ordres a german shepard from slovakia. romance, personal issues, etc. and madness ensues. It was a fun vacation/travel read. 17 months ago
Loved this so much. Great spirit, great motivation to overhaul my diet. Great mix of fun, facts, inspiration and suspense! I liked it so much that I may buy my own copy.
this was a library book. part of my commitment to save money by buying fewer books. 20 months ago
I liked that the protaganist wasn’t some classic beauty and that she was broken physically and emotionally and that brought an empathy to the table, like you could actually know these people versus looking into some glass house of beauty and wealth. Will likely read more of O’Neal’s work. 21 months ago
