I’ve always been a little acrobatic, but I haven’t yet been able to balance myself on my hands. I think I just need some more practice. One of these days I’ll get it down :D
I’ve been trying to do handstands for awhile. I’ll keep practicing till I do it! I’m trying to hold myself up for at least 20 seconds.
provisios:
- tuck your shirt into your trousers before attempting said handstand.
- remove glasses/sunglasses and contents of pockets (cameras, shivs, porcelain dolls)
- do not attempt in a broken-glass-littered-ghetto, or on a balcony (at any height). Please wear clothing.
there are 3 phases to a handstand:
1- the ‘construction’ of the handstand. it’s important not to be a wuss when it comes to inverting your vertical orientation. swing your legs in a scissor kick and use your innnate sense of balance to hold it. do not start attempt the far more complex ‘walking handstand’ until you have mastered the stationary one!
2- bending the knees so your feet point down towards your bum is a good way to lower your center of gravity. It’s also useful for tipping it forward so you can begin the ‘walking handstand’. this is called the ‘walking-initiation-phase’. if you can handstand while singing ‘oompa loompa’ you are on the right track.
3- when you begin to tip ‘forwards’ (as in, your back will eventually fall against the ground), use a generous application of strength to compensate for the change in your centre of gravity, and move your weaker arm forwards about a foot. be aggressive here. repeat with the other arm until you can achieve the ‘walking handstand’!
varations:
- handstand pushups (great for the shoulders, balance your feet against the wall)
- handstand lovemaking (be careful, the inverted position will more likely induce pregnancy!)
that’s all, kids! till next time!
