I have been craving bitter melon for the longest time, but none of the restaurants I normally go to serve it. So, I decided that I had no other choice but to cook it myself. A Vietnamese guy I knew once cooked it for me for breakfast with eggs, although I myself had never cooked bitter melon before. So, I found a simple recipe for bitter melon and eggs online last night, went to the grocery store after work to pick up some ingredients, and went straight to the kitchen when I got home. After about 15 minutes, dinner was ready (see the photo), and it included some noodles I stir fried with a little green onion and chili oil.
My first attempt at cooking bitter melon wasn’t too bad, although I think it could have been better. Bitter melon is… well… bitter. I’ve been told there’s a way to make bitter melon less bitter, like maybe boiling it first before frying it, but I need to find that out for next time. I may also try a different recipe next time.
Cooking was really not so bad, and as ordinary a task it is and as simple as my recipe was, it actually felt sort of like an accomplishment to cook something new. Although I vehemently despise doing dishes, even that didn’t seem horrible today. I don’t often try cooking new things, and I found that I got bored with cooking and just didn’t want to do it anymore. I think I would like to try something like cooking one new thing a week, and then maybe I’ll actually want to cook instead of dreading it…
