Joyce  — 3 months ago

The modernists are some of my favorites and Joyce embodies alot of what I expect from his era of authors. He aimed to change the literary world and he seems to have done that considering how difficult I hear this work to be (after a few passages I see what everyone means). I also need to read Ulysses but because Finnegans Wake seems to be the more difficult of the two, i’ve decided to make this my goal.

finnegan's wake up call  — 7 months ago

My friend Thomas said that the best way to approach this book was to open it anywhere and begin reading a passage. The structure of the beginning and end seem to suggest that this may be appropriate for the rat.

Finnegans Wake  — 1 year ago

It’s in a few different languages and doesn’t start from point a to point b. Anybody know which languages? Where to start?

This scares me  — 1 year ago

I think it’d be so rewarding if I ever had the time and motivation. But I once opened to the first page and it made me want to cry. I dont think my young mind is ready for that yet.

have you heard of any readings of finnegans wake ?  — 1 year ago

I’ve recently started what I suppose is going to be a lifetime job of reading FW. I just finished Richard Ellmann’s superb biography of Joyce which explains (insofar as its possible) some of the genesis of Finnigens Wake. Has anyone ever heard of any Finnegans Wake readings ? Joyce, on many occasions, said that it was to be read aloud in order to get the musicality of the word play. ANy Finnegans Wake reading groups in Vancouver ?

This Summer  — 1 year ago

This is the summer I actually get around to doing this. I was going to buy it at the bookstore the other day, but they didn’t have a copy. I guess I can ride out to Destin then and check out B&N, or of course amazon. Amazon’s probably faster than depending on myself to drive all the crap to Destin.

you gotta be fucking kidding.  — 2 years ago

it won’t let me add this with the title spelt correctly?

a commodius vicus of recirculation  — 2 years ago

I’ve read Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Dubliners, and got most of the way through Ulysses, although that was some time ago. I’ve looked at Finnegan’s Wake and read some of the commentary on it, but it’s so surreal it’s hard going at times. But I’m determined. I like the theory that the last sentence in the books is supposed to complete the first sentence in the book, so it all becomes a big cycle.

post grad school goal  — 2 years ago

I’m thinking of making this my goal for the summer. I’ll be done with grad school and once I complete my move to VA after school ends I’ll be free for the summer so I can devote time to this.
Although I don’t think you can actually read Finnegans Wake so much as experience it (in small doses).
