A Staggering Rat of Heartbreaking Something or Other "I musta made a wrong toin at Al-buh-KOY-kee"
I read a paragraph. I got the rhythm of it, and then read it aloud, enjoying the cadence of the words and the playful arrangements.
A Staggering Rat of Heartbreaking Something or Other "I musta made a wrong toin at Al-buh-KOY-kee"
I cracked it open and began reading passages for the sole purpose of cadence and wordplay. My first reaction was that it seemed impossible to track progress, but then progress isn’t necessarily the goal, exploration is. Exploration, and exhilaration of exploration!
The modernists are some of my favorites and Joyce embodies alot of what I expect from his era of authors. He aimed to change the literary world and he seems to have done that considering how difficult I hear this work to be (after a few passages I see what everyone means). I also need to read Ulysses but because Finnegans Wake seems to be the more difficult of the two, i’ve decided to make this my goal.
A Staggering Rat of Heartbreaking Something or Other "I musta made a wrong toin at Al-buh-KOY-kee"
My friend Thomas said that the best way to approach this book was to open it anywhere and begin reading a passage. The structure of the beginning and end seem to suggest that this may be appropriate for the rat.
It’s in a few different languages and doesn’t start from point a to point b. Anybody know which languages? Where to start?
I think it’d be so rewarding if I ever had the time and motivation. But I once opened to the first page and it made me want to cry. I dont think my young mind is ready for that yet.
I’ve recently started what I suppose is going to be a lifetime job of reading FW. I just finished Richard Ellmann’s superb biography of Joyce which explains (insofar as its possible) some of the genesis of Finnigens Wake. Has anyone ever heard of any Finnegans Wake readings ? Joyce, on many occasions, said that it was to be read aloud in order to get the musicality of the word play. ANy Finnegans Wake reading groups in Vancouver ?
Incredibly worth doing. It will resonate through your life.
Even the name for quarks comes from here.

This is the summer I actually get around to doing this. I was going to buy it at the bookstore the other day, but they didn’t have a copy. I guess I can ride out to Destin then and check out B&N, or of course amazon. Amazon’s probably faster than depending on myself to drive all the crap to Destin.
