I think I’ve finally decided on Judo, though I never thought I’d have an interest in it. My boyfriend has taught me some cool techniques and goes to a gym that’s non-profit and only charges $30 a month. I think I’m sold.

Heh. The title is for fun, obviously.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, should try a martial art (or five). You may not persue it, but I have met many folks who never thought they would persue the martial arts go on to be spectacular. In fact, the ones who find the martial arts easy are usually the ones who drop out in the first six months. What is not challenging, does not often hold our interest. You’ll never know if it’s something you could excell at until you give it a go.

Martial arts gives you a sense of calm, a sense of security, improves your health, involves you in a group activity, improves you confidence, and may lead to you meeting the love of your life (it did for me!!). Even people who have only studied for a few months often walk away with some of those benefits for a lifetime.

The only rule in picking one is finding a school that you like the vibe ebough to return too. I’ve seen a lot of bullshit arguments about what martial art is better in a fight, I say it’s the one you have actually bothered to master. That takes time, and commitment, and you won’t give either of those to a place you don’t dig. Too be sure there are some that are more inherently geared towards butt-whupin’, but in the end (no pun intended… sort of… ;-) ) the person who has actually studied a method will be the one to prevail.

So, find some schools in your area, observe a few classes, take a few introductory classes, pick a school, enroll, and start having a blast!

.. and be proficient in it. Wushu sounds appealing.
