Adam & The Ants - Prince Charming 4 weeks ago

First off, you had to be there. I was young, dumb and full of it – (ok just full of energy and enthusiasm), it was 1981, and for the past year I had felt like we were stepping into the future, like anything was possible. Music videos were not quite yet on TV,mostly we had music variety shows like Musikladen.

And all of a sudden this guy shows up in leather and colorful cloths and with some warpaint on, and he’s like a Pirate! Lots of style and power in what he did. He started with a unique yell that was like a call to arms for indians! And the drums were sounding out a beat like at a pirate hanging. And then the guitars kick in sounding like a Spanish dance. During the chorus men were singing real deep in the background, it is really powerful!

So he performed the ultimate anthem against conformity and for fighting against being ridiculed. The perfect song for a kid in middle school. And it has stood the test of time, and I hope he still listens to it and believes in it because he has had to fight his own battles against people recently.

‘Girl I’m Going To Miss You’ by Milli Vanilli

When I was 11 I was best friends with a girl named Hannah and I used to stay round her house all the time. She didn’t have a tv and we would have the radio on all the time and I distinctly remember sitting by her open fire, roasting chesnuts and sewing little bags while listening to this song.

‘Stay’ by Shakespeare’s Sister

This was the first record I bought myself (I bought another Kylie one at the same time) and it marked a transition period for me where I stopped wearing shorts and trainers and started wearing A LOT of black. Still love this song though!

‘Especially For You’ by Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan

I knew I was going to have to start back tracking as I’ve missed so many important songs out (I was trying to keep some sort of vague chronological order)!

I was a HUGE Kylie and Jason fan from about the age of 9-11, my bedroom was plastered with pictures from their Neighbours days. I could include loads of different songs of theirs on this list but ‘Especially for You’ epitomised that period for me. I can still remember pausing and unpausing my white portable stereo to write down all the lyrics!

The Climb 3 months ago

By Miley Cyrus. It talks about enjoying everday life while trying to acheive our goals. Nice message.

Truly, Madly, Deeply 3 months ago

By Savage Garden. This is my hudbands and my song. It’s a beautiful sentiment. Everything I give him is signed, Truly, Madly, Deeply in love with you!

Que Sera Sera 3 months ago

By Doris Day. Whatever may be may be. My grandfather sang this all the time when I was little. For that I love it, but I also love what it’s saying.

Anyway 3 months ago

By Martina McBride. It talks about living your life without woring about the outcomes. I like that!

‘Come As You Are’ by Nirvana

I had such a crush on this guy at school who loved Nirvana. As a result I soon loved them too and Nivana’s ‘Nevermind’ was the soundtrack to many a stoned lunchtime.

Later on I went out with his friend and we never did get it together. Nevermind.

Songs I Sang To My Child 8 months ago

25) The “I L.O.V.E. Y.O.U. Lullabye”, A Child’s Gift of Lullabyes by
By Barry Winslow
26) Kumbabya
27) Today While The Blossoms Still Cling to the Vine, John Denver
version.

When my daughter was born over 9 years ago, I would hold her as I rocked in the moon/star pattern-covered slider rocking chair and attempt to sing songs to her. I couldn’t remember the words to any songs except the ones above, at first. Eventually came up with Que Sera Sera (on prior list) and other songs along the way.

As she grew older, her appreciation for my singing talent (or lack of) became apparent in the words, “Mom, please don’t sing”. It used to hurt my feelings, but now I get it. My talents lie elsewhere. Every now and then I threaten her with…”If you don’t do what I ask, then I will sing!”. She listens to that one.
