Living in Greece for a year certainly helped improve my Greek. I loved the classes I took while I was there. I wish that I could continue them now. I am afraid if I don’t keep practising I will eventually forget what I have learned, but I’m not fluent enough to practise with anyone!

Every couple months I get out the books and podcasts and start over. It would be great to find a class around Chicago keep me motivated (preferably one not in a greek orthodox church basement.)

I learned Koine Greek 21 years ago (studied it for 2.5 years or so) to be able to read the New Testament, and to prove that a pastor who’d told me I was condemned to hell had no basis for that assertion. I read to prove what it didn’t say, but wasn’t able then to read the scripture for what it did say. That’s come years and years later. Now that I’m reading – in English – I want to go back and relearn the Greek.
