I never hear of any around me (Hampton, VA), although I hear about them and have seen runners in DC. I will most definitely be doing this one day.
How to marathon
How I did it: Train hard with other people who are passionate about running...Then it becomes a very addictive obsession. Book onto a Marathon...Set a date...go to a marathon website and find out when a local marathon will be on. If you dont think you can do it yet, enter anyway! The worst that could happen is that you only get half way...whats more you'll be ready and motivated for the next one, and you get fit doing it!
Lessons & tips: Dont eat too much bread, or anything too much before a marathon. If you have to carbo- load, do it the day before, coz it isnt pleasant runninng a marathon with a full- sick stomach

I ran my first marathon about a year ago, and while the training was really hard, the feeling I had as I crossed the finish line was like nothing I’d ever felt. They told us at the start that less than one half of one percent of the world’s population has ran a marathon. I am very proud to be in that small crowd. Hopefully you will be too!!
i just completed my first half marathon today!! that is 13.1 miles or 20km.
it took me 3:17 minutes.
a full marathon would be double of that in length. i need to work on the speed to shorten the duration of pain. it is going to take a lot more training for me to get ready for a full marathon.
i completed a 15k last saturday. signed up for a 1/2 marathon (20k) for the end of november 2008.
keep training and may be marathon in 2010.

Well training has begun for the marathon. Can’t wait for summer to end so that I can train in nice cool weather. So far, no knee problems=)
So I entered a bit on a whim but also because I knew that I really had to start running again. I had a little break due to illness and just getting tied up with work. Making excuses really not to go out running but I’ve started again now and I have to say that it is really great. It is so de-stressing that it is the perfect sure at the moment to wind down while writing up the PhD :)
