They were giving these away at the village fair yesterday to promote a new restaurant. A little bit of lemon juice – nom nom. How have I lived this long and not tried one before?
It was a starter at the Aldeburgh Regatta restaurant with Zoah, Saturday 3rd November 2007.
I found them surprisingly delicate and soft, not at all rubbery as I’d expected. Before I couldn’t understand why people would just swallow such a sought-after food delicacy, now I see that its to get the unique flavour without the unsettling sensation of biting something so soft it could almost be perceived as still living…
Finally did it! Was in town last Saturday and there was a stall in Temple Bar Food market selling them. I just said “screw it” to myself and asked for one. It was delicious. Not as slimy as I thought it would be and a gorgeous flavour. I recommend it! Incidentally, I thought it was nicer to chew them rather than just swallowing them whole (as I’ve heard some people do). If you like other shellfish like mussels, clams and scallops, you’ll probably like oysters too.
