Tomorrow I will go to a very rural isolated HIV research centre. Will be there for 1 week.

I have no idea what to expect. Just go with the flow and do what I’m suppose to do. Got my Milo packets and Maggi instant noodles so I know I wont starve to death there. It’ll be an awesome experience nontheless.

I have done a comprehensive genetic analysis on KIR genes of 40 HIV patients. Time to compile the results and send it to my supervisor. Am procrastinating big time arrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Lets not forget why I’m doing this at the first place. Rememberrrrrrr

Today I will start my genetic analysis on 24 HIV patients. In 3 months time, I can further understand the genetics, current HIV therapy & it’s side effects, and the human immune response against HIV. Linking all this will be a worthwhile challenge.

Ultimately I would like to find natural therapy or herbal remedies against HIV.

Cmonnnnn!!!!!!

Becoming a Medical Assistant 3 years ago

Why Become a Medical Assistant???

Medical assisting is an exciting and challenging program of study which prepares the student to work in a wide variety of health care environments including hospitals, physicians’ offices, clinics, laboratories and state health facilities.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Medical assistants held about 387,000 jobs in 2004. About 6 out of 10 worked in offices of physicians; about 14 percent worked in public and private hospitals, including inpatient and outpatient facilities; and 11 percent worked in offices of other health practitioners, such as chiropractors, optometrists, and podiatrists.

The rest worked mostly in outpatient care centers, public and private educational services, other ambulatory health care services, State and local government agencies, employment services, medical and diagnostic laboratories, and nursing care facilities. Medical assisting is projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations over the 2004-14 period.

The medical assistant is an important link between the patient and the health care delivery system and provides essential support in the areas of patient care, medical and lab procedures, records management and office administration. Students will be exposed to practical administrative, interpersonal and clinical skills which will prepare them with the technical ability and versatility needed to establish careers in the field of allied health services.

Those who have worked in the profession for a few years often wonder if they should go on and become a nurse. Others continue in the medical assisting field for many, many years. Not because of the pay (there still is a big gap between the medical assistant’s wages and that of a nurse), but because of the strong relationships they forge with the doctors and other health care staff and also with their patients, which almost always is a long term relationship.
