Now I get together with friends at least once a week. It’s great! I love being in touch and going to do fun stuff with them. I have increased my friend circle by a lot and I sometimes go out on a limb to have a good time. Worth it!!

Invited my sister and her husband and new baby over for impromptu pizza on Sunday afternoon two weeks ago. Hopefully this is just the beginning of building a stronger relationship with her and her family. I talk with her often over the phone, but we rarely see each other. The birth of her first child has made me feel closer to her as now we have much more in common.

I have always led a fairly sheltered and protected life…. limiting the people I allow into the inner sanctum. After my children were born, the circle became even smaller until I realized I had spent years working…. caring for children, home and husband and little else. My friends and social life, limited in the beginning, had ceased to be a part of my life at all. Now that the children are a little older and my job is a little less demanding, I feel that I may have more time and energy to devote to recultivating some friendships and, possibly, establishing new ones. I hope to plan a dinner party in my home at least four times a year. I hope to invite friends out to a restaurant six times a year. I hope to invite friends to do a fun activity such as bowling, canoeing, hiking etc at least four times a year.

Last Saturday my sis and I hosted a singles’ Valentine get-together. The requirements were that everyone had to dress formally and bring a Valentine card. One of my girlfriends came over and we got ready together. We three girls met four guys at Chili’s and ate together. No one brought a Valentine; everyone forgot. So we made our own Valentines out of paper napkins, Splenda packets, and those little identification cards that come inside wallets.
Anyway, then all of us except one guy headed to the bowling alley for some pool. We played for an hour and a half and listened to the jukebox and chatted. That was much fun. One of the guys did the classic “show a girl how to play pool by putting your arms around her” stance with me. We also borrowed the guys jackets to cover our strapless selves in the 20-degree weather outside. It was all-around good.
Man I was smart to make this goal!
