I finished writing an article for an academic journal but have not yet submitted it. The article is finished but I really want to revise it again before submission. So far this goal has taken me six months and it will take at least four months after I submit to know if it has been accepted for publication.
How to publish an article
How I did it: I wrote what wanted to be written, what I thought I had to offer, then got the Writer's Market and found the contact information for publications that seemed to be a good fit for what I was writing. I sent off my articles, was contacted by the publishers, and that was that. One was published soon after acceptance, another I had to wait a few years to see it in print after acceptance, but it ended up in a book as well.
Lessons & tips: If I planned to keep writing articles, I think I would eventually try to make a portfolio to send with queries, but my big goal is to try my hand at writing a novel (or a nonfiction book, but I'm not really an expert at anything)...and right now I don't have time for both.
Resources: The Writer's Market
also...the Poet's market for a couple short poems I submitted.

is almost ready. Only some of the coauthors have to comment it. I really hope I can submit in the next two weeks =) I would be so releaved when I got it published. I can’t work on it any longer… I don’t want to read the same sentences again and again, brrrrrr…
Almost every day…either on my walk to the office, on the train, or while in a boring meeting (which is frequent)...I write stories in my head. I have been writing these on my Mac at home at night…I wrote one last night about my train ride and the funny conductor. I still have to write about the woman on the train who was deeply involved in consuming her Taco Bell dinner. It really was quite amusing. But the point is that I am writing!

Yesterday was a good day: my boss was really reading my article and not only say he will do this next day, and next day and so on. Now I have some corrections to do in my introduction. Thats one step in the right direction to publish is. Finally! The paper was laying on the desk of my boss the last two! years. I really hope now we’ll finish it and send it out.
So about a month ago, my first paper was finally published. It took about a year, partially my fault, but also some things were beyond my control. During this incredibly painful process, I learned a lot—it’s making my second paper much easier.
Still, we academics don’t always get a lot of guidance on this stuff. It’s assumed that everyone knows the best way to do this. A friend recently sent me this article http://tinyurl.com/689hw6 which clarifies the situation.
I’ve had several articles published. It’s gratifying to see your words in print.

Yay! I co-authored an article on the foster care system and it was published online.
