We were stationed in Anchorage 4 years ago from Florida. We had a 2 year old daughter and a boy on the way. We love it here, and we are staying.
Mogwai01 is super happy!
How I did it: My father had a job assignment in Anchorage and I tagged along - in February. It was cold and snowy and dark - and I fell in love! Then I met a guy...and a year later, I moved to Cooper Landing, a small town of about 500 or so in the summer time. I worked as a waitress at a nearby lodge and had an AWESOME summer. I now live in Anchorage, and there is a ton of snow outside and I love it! Read how I did it…

All I can say is, moving was the best idea, even if it leads me elsewhere ;p it has become a driving force to keep me thinking and moving forward.

I still cant believe I made it… I won’t even change the status of this goal yet (not until day 7 at least) but I am here and I think I prepared well for the changes. The cold is different, it is dry, and since all I brought were warm functional clothes, it’s alright. It’s certainly a contrast from the non-stop mess that is NJ, and the warm, inviting hotspot that is HI. You gotta have the desire to be here because it can certainly seem barren. I picked a good time to move. I will get to see the tail end of winter, a bit of the horrid-sounding -25 temps, and flow right into spring and summer in no time….
I have been looking at Alaskan jobs on the net.
I definitely want to live in Alaska.
I must, however make some preparations first.
My aging mom will have to be certain that my brother and nephews and their families (all within 10 minutes of her home) will continue to look in on her and help her when she needs.
Today, on a curious note…...I typed “I want to live in Alaska” in the search window.
Guess what happened.
I am at home in the cold, I have lived in extreme cold climes before and embraced it.
I enjoy remoteness and isolation.
I can do withoutall the trappings of the big city.
I want to do this while I am still young enough to establish a firm foothold and build a foundation for the remainder of my life…..in the place I call “Paradise”
At this very moment, I must leave the computer to travel to see an old friend who is dying of cancer.
A fellow cowboy, wrangler, family man…..and a good friend.
I do not wish to die in some city in some cold hospital hooked up to machines.
I have no other family, save brother and his sons….no wife or children. I am happiest in my times spent in the wood…or mountains. I hunt, fish…farm….
I studied geology and range wildlife management in college once…in the last century.
I will return here to read more….and to seek what insights and comments I can find.
Good luck to those of you who have taken the first step.
Tell me what you find there.
Best Wishes

Ok, so it is down to the last day before my journey in Alaska begins…. I may seem ready and I may be ready to jump on a plane and go, but inr eality I have no clue what lies ahead. The weather is supposed to be shitty tomorrow but if I am delayed in departing, it’s no worries cuz I have 11 hours to kill in Salt Lake City… ya that is a February flight to Anchorage. All I think I need are warm functional clothes. I hear when I land on VDay it will be warm, like 30. Hah, I can’t believe that day is finally here. 24 more hours.

three days left to pack, box up, ship, and store stuff for my move to AK. Alohaaa Alaska!
I saved my money, bought a one-way ticket to Anchorage. I brought a large bag of clothes and my bike. Moved to Anchorage for four months. Hard, difficult, lonely, challenging, frustrating. Then it was exciting, fun, welcoming, beautiful, and inspiring.
There were things I would have done differently, but it was an amazing experience I wouldn’t trade for anything!
