Programming is an invaluable skill. I hope to be using it for the rest of my life, regardless of how I’ll apportion my income. I like writing, being productive, and otherwise doing well. Programming is one way to do that.

I WANNA DO IT BUT DON’T KNOW HOW!
Currently a GIS Specialist (map making) and want to take it to the next level. Reading a book about VB right now and Access databases, it’s a start. Would like to learn how to make custom mapping applications.
i feel super smart when i can bring this up at parties and know im probably the only person in the room who knows how to do it. i also like to think it proves to any prospective boys im not a dumb blonde. but who knows.
I am hoping that by learning computer programming as well as do well at my current job, I can move up the corporate ladder.

It’s been a very long time since I could do this, and back then it was just basic DOS and Unix commands, some VB and C++, and a little html. I’d like to actually get comfortable in Unix environments, and starting with LISP, figure out Java, and maybe RoR, and really get C down pat.

Folks,
depending on how loose/strict your definition of computer programming is, I can recommend about five paths…
1. Perl (use Robert’s Perl Tutorial – just ‘google’ it)
this took me about a weekend...2. JavaScript
this took me about a weekend (it's not worth your time)3. Python (the ‘Python Docs’)
I worked on this for about a month of 'an hour here & there'I never 'bought' it.. but it's good.. see Google, ILM & c...4. C
C was my 'first' & I am still recovering from it...5. Java
if you're curious about Java but have made no real progress, just hmmm & haw while studying pages 'about' Java, then try:BeanShell (this takes about a weekend & is simple)orGroovy (I haven't learnt this (yet))...I can recommend for those who go the BeanShell path that youlook up: Art of Illusion (a 3D modelling/animation tool thatuses BeanShell for making things happen...)I studied Java for about a year (I was a grad student then)..it's hard.. BeanShell is nicer for beginners...& yes, you'll hear this & that about it, but after a week....you'll know code..J
