I missed the meetup….

Todd Gehman funemployed for the summer
This was very fun. Meeting locals definitely gave us a better perspective on Montréal, and we managed to learn a whole heap about Canadian politics as well. And Emacs. And the history of the Plateau district. And video games. And linguistics. And recommended dive bars in the area. I believe various forms of suicide were also discussed, but only in the third person; everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Beforehand, La Cabane was either amused or annoyed when I had to tell them that 32 people had RSVP’d for the gathering, but since it was over the internet, I actually expected anywhere between zero and twenty of them to show. I think we got a dozen locals visiting over the course of the evening, which ain’t too shabby. They all seemed smart, earnest, politically aware, and fun…which is a pretty good set of attributes to bring to a meeting of strangers. Here’s who made it, in order of appearance. Cool peeps!
My buddy Todd and I were in Montréal from Seattle for a long weekend, and he graciously organized this event.
The attendees were all pretty interesting, intelligent, and fun to talk to. Not only did I enjoy cool conversation with new people, but I also realised how little I honestly knew about Canada, in general, and Montréal specifically.. Oh yeah, and we got some tips on local watering holes…a definite plus! I’m so glad we had a decent turnout (if only for the sake of Todd’s ego)!
I think this is an excellent way to meet locals when visiting a new town (or moving to a new one, I guess). And, like on “Fat Albert,” if you’re not careful, you just might learn something.
Sorry I did not make it. I finished work up north a little too late on Saturday.
I hope everyone gets together again in the near future.
Something came up. I’m sorry I missed it. Worse part is that I live a 3 minute walk from La Cabane and I’ve never been (this is the second meetup I miss at that venue). It must be cursed!
yes nice weird. a bit awkward for some it seemed. needed more time but i had to go early-ish. I hope todd and Lori made the party at the Nest…

This is probably those interesting bunch of people that I’ve met yet in Montreal. I really hope I can see some of you again soon; I had a really great time.
Hey guys, sorry, but our 2 1/2 year old just got out of the hospital today from a bad fall on Thursday.
Hope you all have fun.

Well, Lori and I have already managed to see two other places named La Cabane while wandering around Montréal. So just to clarify: tonight’s meetup is at La Cabane on St. Laurent, right across the street from Schwartz’s. 3872 St. Laurent. We stopped by yesterday and let them know we’d need some space, so they know we’re coming. Stop by anytime from 6:00 until…whenever. Looking forward to meeting you all!
