Now that I am a literacy volunteer via my library, I will mark this goal complete. I am teaching adults, some who are ESL and others that just never learned.
Last week we had a book club session (we read paragraphs aloud as we went around in a circle) and I have another this week. Yay to teaching adults to read!!

I am currently receiving training in a city sponsored literary program. While taking the classes I will be matched with a student who wants to read.

I finally called a shelter today that was looking for tutors to help with GED completion and literacy!! Since it’s Christmas time, they are swamped with other things so after the holidays I’ll be meeting with someone to see how I can help!!

when my friend was five years old, she was already learning how to read at school but couldn’t quite grasp the english words. she could do everything else but read. i love reading and whenever i visited her, i would take a book from their shelf and read with her. she had one of those leappad readers too but it wasn’t as good as reading from a book. we were reading a page each and she stopped me and said, “i want to read this bit” and pointed to a massive paragraph. she read it near perfect and now has no trouble :] she’s more into sports than reading but she has no trouble with it now.
if you ever get the chance to teach someone to read, do it. it’s a fantastic experience and feeling to know that you’ve given someone the key to the hall of doors. you’ve opened so many new worlds (books) for them. :]

Okay, application is in. I have a confirmed my spot in orientation with the local library next week to begin the training program to teach adult literacy. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. This is a minimum commitment of 6 months I was told. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time since I love to read and want to share this passion with others. Due to my excuse of lack of time, I procrastinated. I’m going to see through this.

I am a caseworker with the local Disabililties Board, and I have a client who sustained a traumatic brain injury and is now unable to read. He knows his alphabet, and can “read” a word by spelling it out letter by letter… this, however, is insanely tedious, and plus (with his short-term memory/working memory impairments) he forgets the first few words he read by the time he gets to the end of the sentence. This is the only “need” this particular clients has, and I’ve tried just about everything that I can think of. Does anyone out there have any advice on what I should do – techniques that maybe I haven’t tried? if anyone can offer any words of advice (and/or encouragment at this pojnt) they would be greatly appreciated!!!!
