Got my own skis now :)…and I had my first ski training last week… it was fun. All set for the winter!

Untitled 18 months ago

I’ve been skiing since I was 5. It’s so much fun.

Skiing was great fun.

I might do it again some day, but for now I prefer not being out in the cold and snow.

If you plan to do this, remember to be safe!

Done. In Sölden, Austria 18 months ago

Ok, so I got really lucky in that I have a job with a fantastic company that paid for all of its employees in Europe to go skiing in Austria for a day last week.

I got really badly sunburned (note that even though it’s cold, it’s also very exposed to the sun—use protection!) but that didn’t show it’s effects until afterwards so I wasn’t put off the skiing.

I want to see snow where I can play in it, and I want to go skiing.

virtualbean has been getting back to routine!

It just wasn’t as fun as I thought it would be… probably because I was so worried about breaking something!

Where to ski around Lake Tahoe 21 months ago

There are lots of ski resorts around Lake Tahoe. So far, I’ve checked out only three:

  • Donner Ski Ranch – least expensive (this year, all the staff – waiters, clerks, ski lift people, chefs, everyone – was outsourced from Brazil, Argentina and Chile), not crowded, has slopes for beginners, relatively small, no ski checking, closes at 4pm, small lodge
  • Boreal – more expensive, more people, has night skiing and freestyling, you can check in your skis in an attended area for free, larger lodge
  • Heavenly – the most upscale ski resort, can be more crowded, many ski lesson available

If you just want to ski, pick Donner. I prefer Heavenly for the interaction with people. Went to Donner on a Friday and it looked a bit deserted. It’s fun to chat people up during the ski lift ride. You start with “Hey guys, where you from” “How’s it going” or ask them to compare skiing to snowboarding. I met a Romanian guy this way – what were the odds…

fond memories! 22 months ago

When I was much younger, and we would visit my Dad’s family in New York, I learned to ski out there. The family had a huge amount of property and lots of bunny hills that were great to learn on! When I was much older, I went skiing for real at Big Bear Mountain, and that was such a rush! I haven’t been since 2001, but I am hoping to take my husband out there with me sometime so that he can do it too :D
